AUSTIN (CBS SPORTS) – Texas offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin will be the next head coach at Arkansas State.

Harsin replaces Gus Malzahn, who left ASU for Auburn last week after one season, where he led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record and the Sun Belt Conference title. Malzahn had replaced Hugh Freeze who left also after one season leading the Red Wolves to a 10-2 record in 2011 before Freeze landed a job in the SEC, at Ole Miss.

The 35-year-old Harsin interviewed for the ASU vacancy on Tuesday. The former Boise State assistant spent two seasons at Texas, where he was known for his creative play-calling. Despite UT’s issues with inconsistent quarterback play, the Longhorns still managed to rank No. 24 in scoring this fall under Harsin.

Former UT star Major Applewhite, who has the title of co-coordinator and running backs coach, appears to be the leading candidate to take over Harsin’s role for Texas. In 2007, Applewhite worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama, where he was the youngest coordinator at the FBS level.
