DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - What happened inside of a former Dallas Mavericks player’s home? That question is at the heart of a murder trial in Dallas that will continue on Thursday. Nickey Van Exel will be back in front of a judge and his father, Nick Van Exel, is expected to take the stand on Thursday. The elder Van Exel played for the Mavericks in 2002 and 2003, but will now be a character witness for his son who is on trial.

The incident in question happened in Garland in 2010, on the night after Christmas. The victim was Bradley Eyo. According to police, he went to his best friend’s house and was ultimately shot and killed. Prosecutors said that it was a case of murder and retaliation because the victim had informed Van Exel that he was going to implicate the basketball player’s son in a series of robberies in the Houston area.

The suspect claimed that he and Eyo were playing with a shotgun that accidentally went off.

But police said that the defendant wrapped Eyo’s body in plastic and dumped him into nearby Lake Ray Hubbard.

Jurors must decide if the incident was an accident, or if Nickey Van Exel intentionally murdered his best friend.
