FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – A man is in critical condition after a police chase ended with a crash early Thursday morning in Fort Worth. Police said that the incident started just before 2:00 a.m. when officers spotted a car traveling at a high rate of speed down University Drive.

When those officers attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver fled and lead police on a short chase through several residential areas. The suspect lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of Bellaire Drive and Overton Park Drive, not far from the TCU campus. The car cruised through at least one red light, along the wrong side of the road, and past a group of pedestrians before hitting a tree in front of a home. The driver was ejected.

Carol Lawrence lives at the home where the crash took place, and was just going to bed when she heard a loud noise. “There was a car here and the driver had been half-ejected out of the car, and he was partially in the street,” she said.

That suspect was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth in critical condition, but he is expected to survive his injuries.

Police do not know why the man refused to stop. He has yet to be identified. Despite the close proximity to the TCU campus, authorities are not sure if the suspect is a student.

A traffic investigator was sent to the scene to look into the cause of the crash.
