IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) – Marcus Spears, a Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick in 2005, announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he’s being cut by the team.

“Fans of Dallas thank u all so much for 8 yrs the good and bad times ill be moving on!! The support has been tremendous! From my family thx U,” Spears posted on Twitter. “Guys don’t be sad for me please! I’ve been blessed beyond measure! Everything you do in life is for a season except for family!”

Spears, a backup defensive lineman and locker-room leader, will be officially released after June 1, saving Dallas $2 million of room – but this move is as much about talent as it is about finance.

The Cowboys still don’t have room to be a shopper in free agency yet. Hoped-for deals with quarterback Tony Romo and defensive end Anthony Spears can eventually change that.

But in the meantime, rumors about Dallas’ interest in “name’’ players are across-the-board false. That includes names like Cleveland returner Josh Cribbs and Washington defensive back DeAngelo Hall, of whom a source says, “I have no idea where that came from.’’

Another fantasy: Bears middle linebacker icon Brian Urlacher, who was connected to Dallas by one report – again, with no consideration of finance (or the fact the Cowboys already employ Sean Lee at his position.)

At some point, a similar designation could come on tackle Doug Free, creating $7 million of room. The Cowboys are also considering shaving fullback Lawrence Vickers from their cap. Then Dallas can consider second-tier free agents like tight end Kellen Davis (Bears), linebacker Chase Blackburn (Giants) and guard Matt Slauson (Jets). Former Cowboys receiver Laurent Robinson, released by Jacksonville, could also be a consideration if he comes cheaply enough.
