Latest on Storm Timing for Tonight and How Cool It Gets Tomorrow

By Chief Meteorologist Larry Mowry

Tornado watches are out for far Northwest Texas all the way up to near Chicago!  All the red outlined boxes on the map below are areas that are under a tornado watch this afternoon.

The storms firing up in the watch box areas are forming along the battle zone of cold and warm air.  Take a look at temperatures as of 4pm across parts of Texas and Oklahoma.  You can clearly see where the cold air is located.

This cold air will eventually win and send a cold front into North Texas overnight.

For the rest of this evening we are looking at mainly dry weather across North Texas.  I can’t rule out a few spotty showers developing but no big storms expected for the rest of this evening.  This changes overnight.  The latest timing of the storms puts them in the DFW Metroplex between about 3am and 6am.  This could be adjusted an hour either way depending on the speed of the front.  Our main concern overnight will be gusty winds and hail.  The tornado threat looks to be low, but it is certainly not zero.  Like storms we had last week, the cold air will tend to undercut the storms.  This lessons the severity of the storms and also would eliminate the tornado threat.

Below is a look at the general timing of the storms.
