AUSTIN (AP) — Hundreds of public libraries and schools across Texas are eligible to receive nutrition and fitness-related books and DVDs to help fight childhood obesity.

Comptroller Susan Combs on Tuesday announced a partnership with the Texas Library Association. Combs says officials seek to raise awareness and understanding about the importance of healthy habits throughout life.

The state’s 910 public libraries and more than 1,100 select public elementary schools are in line to get nutrition and fitness-related books and other educational materials. The items will be distributed starting next month.

The comptroller’s office will also supply free sports equipment to public schools in areas considered high risk for obesity.

Legislators have required the comptroller’s office to compile research and information on the economic effects of obesity and areas where children are at risk.
