Bees Attack, Kill Two Horses In Pantego

PANTEGO (CBSDFW.COM) – The backyard is where Kristen Beauregard spent many hours training and exercising her two beloved horses: a one-year-old Shetland show pony named Trump and six-year-old Chip, a miniature show horse. But after a deadly bee attack Wednesday night, she says she’ll never look at that area the same way again.
Kristen remembers heading back to her house when all of a sudden, “They all just hit me all along my back.” A swarm of 30,000 bees attacked her and her horses. “It was just black out here, it looked like nighttime out here,” she said.
Immediately, Kristen jumped into her swimming pool. It’s not normal for a horse to like water, but Trump she said trusted her when she told him to do the same. She was stung at least 200 times. Both Trump and Chip were stung thousands of times.
Pantego emergency crews arrived quickly, but there were just too many bee stings. She recalls it being a very emotional moment for everyone there, as many realized how severe the horses’ injuries were. She tearfully said “And I watched that horse who trusted me to always, always take care of him and I watched him look up at me in so much pain and thrash around and look at me like – why aren’t you fixing this?”
Chip died there, and Trump later died at a veterinary clinic. Four of her 10 hens died as well.
Trump was going to show in a competition in Oklahoma next month — the Super Bowl for horses, Kristen said.
Next, the bees are being tested to see if they are Africanized “killer” bees. Apparently, their hive secretly grew enormously inside the wall of a shed.
“I’ve never been a step-on-the-ants or kill-the-bees person, but you know what? That needed to be taken care of,” Kristen said. She wants everyone to be aware – so they don’t lose something or someone they love too. “Even if you only see 3 or 4 at a time, have a professional come out, I’m not even kidding.”
Kristen said she spent thousands of dollars on her horses, but there’s no value on this kind of devastating loss.
