DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — When the newest incarnation of Big Tex is ready to welcome people to the State Fair of Texas, he will be waving from a completely renovated Big Tex Circle. A $600,000 renovation is underway right now at Fair Park.
Sue Gooding with the State Fair of Texas says that the new pedestal for the new Big Tex will be bigger and stronger.
“He left here about five to six thousand pounds. He’s coming back in the neighborhood of 25,000 pounds,” says Gooding. “We had to go in there and put in piers and prepare that entire area for a much heavier structure.”
The fire that destroyed Big Tex during the final days of the Fair last year was the result of a short in the moving statue’s wiring. Gooding says that the entire electrical and sound systems are being replaced as part of the renovation and will be stored in a secure vault underneath Big Tex Circle. A fire repression system is also being installed.
So, what will the new Big Tex look like and sound like? Gooding says that everyone will find out at the same time. Plans are to install the new Big Tex in secret this year and then drape him with a large curtain.
“There will be an unveiling of him on the opening day of the State Fair of Texas, and at that same time, we’ll hear his voice,” says Gooding.
The 2013 State Fair of Texas opens September 27th.
