DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas Independent School District teacher was arrested and charged with injury to a child after allegedly choking a 12-year-old student.

The victim, Joshua Flores, said his gym teacher, Javier Valladarez, got upset when he asked another student for a piece of paper for an assignment at Thomas Edison Middle School.

“He kneed me twice and the third time I turned around and he was right there and then he grabbed me by my neck, put me in a headlock and dragged me his classroom and threw me,” Flores said.

The attack, with the district confirms took place in front of dozens of students, was caught on school surveillance cameras and left bruises on Flores’ neck.

During the struggle, Flores attempted to call his mother for help, but Valladarez took Flores’ phone away. Her voicemail captured part of their confrontation.

Valladarez is heard saying, ”Do it! Don’t say it! You better do it!”

When Michelle Larin called her son back, Valladarez’ unknowingly opened the line.

“I listened to the conversation of what he was having with my son and he kept saying, ‘You want to be a man? You want to be a man?’” Larin said.

She was stunned when she arrived at the school and learned what had taken place.

“I see my son coming around the corner and he is just crying and crying and crying and hugs me and he’s like, ‘The teacher choked me!’ and I said, ‘The teacher did what?’” she said.

Valladarez was placed on administrative leave immediately after the incident. He was arrested Thursday and charged with injury to a child.

Phone calls to his attorney were not returned.
