Why we’re getting primarily sleet and freezing rain has to do with the warm layer of air about 6,000 feet above the surface. Where the rain drops have a chance to refreeze before hitting the ground, you get sleet.

Most of our accidents are north of the blue line at this time, where temps have fallen into the 20s. Bridges and overpasses most susceptible.

Below freezing for days. We may climb above freezing for an hour or two Sunday afternoon, but it will be close. We are looking at least 72 hours below freezing at DFW, possibly longer.

Focus is on the ice storm now, but the brutal coming this weekend will put lows in the teens Saturday morning.

It is 31 degrees now at DFW. It won’t get above freezing except maybe for one or two hours Sunday afternoon.

345 p.m.

Freezing rain/sleet is moving into the metroplex this afternooon. Ice accumulation is beginning in areas north and west of DFW. There is light accumulation on elevated surfaces in the northern suburbs. Ice accumulation gets heavier the farther north you go. Reports of bad roads in Cooke, Fannin, Wise and Jack Counties already. Conditions are expected to deteriorate between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the metroplex.
