WEST (AP) - Crews have begun tearing down a Central Texas high school that was severely damaged in an April fertilizer plant explosion that claimed 15 lives.

The superintendent of the West Independent School District says everything salvageable has been removed from West High School. Marty Crawford says demolition that began Wednesday should take several weeks.

The April 17 blast also damaged intermediate and middle schools in West, about 80 miles south of Fort Worth.

School board president Larry Hykel says a new high school and a new combined middle and intermediate school will be built at the same site and should open in 2015.

Crawford has estimated rebuilding could cost up to $60 million. A final figure has not been reached with insurers.

Portable classrooms are being used for displaced students.
