EDINBURG (AP) - Republican Greg Abbott is bringing the governor’s race back to the Texas border, where Democrat Wendy Davis is on the defensive after losing heavily Hispanic counties in this week’s primary election.

Abbott on Thursday is making a rally in Edinburg the first stop in his general election campaign. The Texas attorney general said this week that Republicans this election will reach out to Hispanics like never before.

Davis finished behind Ray Madrigal, a largely unknown Democrat, in several border counties in Tuesday’s primary.

The Fort Worth state senator still performed better than Abbott in those counties, but faced questions about her second-place showing among Democrat voters.

Davis hasn’t directly addressed her results in the Rio Grande Valley but says she’s excited about opportunities there and plans to return.
