ARLINGTON, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) – I’ve covered 13 NCAA Finals Fours in the past, this marks the 14th one… whew!
It’s the first one of covered in 10 years!
Why the decade long drought? quite honestly, I thought the college basketball game had fallen off. I wasnt excited anymore because most of the great players were “one & done” turning pro before we could enjoy their story and follow their careers.
The schools were still exciting & the powers were still powerful & the underdogs still provided the upsets and there was still the brcakets and March Madness..but the Final Four just didnt do it for me anymore. So i stopped going.
But here it is, in our own backyard again! I was at the last one in 1986! And just like this weekend it was kinda cold & rainy (what is it with North Texas weather when big sporting events come to town?)
All that being said… it’s still a great weekend!
I enjoyed going to the media party Thursday night at the South Side Studios on Lamar where they shoot the tv series “Dallas”.
Lots of fun, food, music, Rolando Blackman, Verne Lundquist providing a lot of anticdotes and holding court. I also made it over to anotherone of dozens of parties that night.
It was raining so i ran in to the South Side ballroom (formerly Gilley’s) where everyone was watching the conclusion of the NIT Championship game of SMU vs Minnesota.
When the game ended, SMU losing by 3pts, Iheard an “Oh my”. I looked behind me and it was basketball legend Dick Vitale in a yellow sweater texting and shaking his head. At that point I suddenly realized I was at Vitales party! Oh my!
I made the rounds and then went home.
I had a very full day Friday. We did our Gbag Nation radio show from Texas Motor Speedway host of the Duck Commander 500.
We had guests from the race and the Final Four radio row in Dallas. It was an all day, all night affair.
I got home at midnight!
So the Saturday has going like this leading up to the first semi final game: Uconn vs Florida…
Meet RJ Choppy, Cory & Kevin of K & C Masterpiece at a parking lot in Arlington near Six Flags.
We then rode together in my suv to the AT&T stadium together. Lots of fun as Choppy harrassed people walking to the stadium with crazy comments!
After getting our credentials we hung out with fans of the for Schools. Walked the area around the basketball floor talking with media types, cheerleaders, celebrities & security. *Sigh…. i guess i’m getting my excitement back for the ncaa final four.
The passion is returning! Here we go!
Mmore after the game!
