DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Illegally parked visitors to the vista at White Rock Lake are disrupting the area’s tranquil vibe.
“We’re trying to protect the park land itself and vehicles and park land just don’t mix,” said community activist and longtime lake highlands resident, Ted Barker.
In response, the city of Dallas is implementing and enforcing new parking and sound guidelines for big events such as Thursday’s ‘Celebration White Rock’ event. About 500 people participated in the celebration, which is a relatively small number compared to other events, but parking was a problem nonetheless.
One attendee, Terrance Tippett dropped his daughter off at the lake and parked at Garland Rd. and I-30. Tippett has been visiting White Rock Lake for 12 years.
Nearby resident Dave Lebrac opted to walk to the race rather than drive.
“The parking situation is deplorable — it’s really bad, said Lebrac.
Parking problems have caused the city to ask those those applying to host events at the White Rock Lake to submit a detailed parking plan for approval by the city. Failure to comply may result in cancellation of events of denial of future of events. Vehicles not in compliance could receive a ticket or get towed.
“I guess it’s necessary but it will make events like this difficult to hold.”
New sound guidelines say that amplified sound can only begin after 8 a.m. and sound checks will be performed only by event organizers and parks and rec employees.
“I think if they have the ordinances they need to be enforced,” said Barker.
For many people, the new rules and regulations are just a part of the experience of visiting one of Dallas’ gems.
“You plan in advance if you’ve done this more than once you know it’s going to be kind of an adventure,” said Tara Dullye, a long time runner.
