DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Kidnapped and taken for a ride — after that experience a 12-year-old Dallas girl learned a terrifying lesson in trust.
The young girl got into a car with a stranger along Commerce and Hampton. She never thought the man wouldn’t let her back out of the vehicle.
CBS 11 News spoke with the girl, as police continued their hunt for the suspect.
“I was very scared,” the girl said. “I was thinking like I could have died. I could have died today.”
The girl explained that for half an hour a strange man drove her around Oak Cliff and refused to let her go. She was first approached while walking down Commerce Street Monday night. The girl was on her way home when the man offered her a ride.
“Something about him made me trust him,” she said.
The man did indeed go toward her neighborhood, but drove right past it and kept going.
“He asked me if I drink beer, if I smoke marijuana, if I’ve ever had sex. And then he would constantly ask me if I was scared… every four or five question he’d ask me, ‘Are you scared?’”
The girl said she quickly grabbed her chance when the man finally pulled over. “I opened the door and just like ran. He tried to grab me again and throw me back in the truck, but I just like punched him and tried to get away.”
Neighbor Oscar Garcia was outside his home when he saw her. “She was coming down this hill,” he said pointing. “She was walking fast and she was almost crying. You could tell in her face that she wanted to cry. And at the time I knew something was really bad. I asked her and that’s when she told me she was almost raped.”
Garcia called 911 and within minutes an ambulance arrived.
While the outcome wasn’t as bad as it could have been, Garcia says the image of that frightened young girl still disturbs him. “I guess it happens everywhere, but to encounter it… It makes me angry.”
The victim describes her abductor as a Hispanic man, around 30-years-old, with a witch in his left eye. At the time of the incident he was wearing a goatee and had a spiked haircut. The man was driving a silver-colored 4-door truck with an orange radio. There was also a rosary hanging from the rearview mirror.
Anyone with information about the abduction or the suspect is asked to contact Dallas police at 214-671-4217.
