FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – A Fort Worth police officer continues to recover after he was shot in the line of duty over the weekend.

Officers Xavier Serrano and Ray Azucena were hit responding to a call of a suicide on the south side of Fort Worth late Friday night.

The officers found an elderly man dead and his 55-year-old son on the property. He started shooting at the officers and ultimately ended up dead. It’s unclear if he shot himself or was killed by police.

Azucena, was released from the hospital early Saturday. Serrano, had three more serious gunshot wounds to the upper torso arms and shoulder, but police said he’s doing better after surgery Monday.

Rick Van Houten with the Fort Worth police officers association said Serrano is in good spirits and the community’s response has been incredible.

“We see it on a daily basis in this community. People will come up to our officers giving them hugs and shake their hands, saying ‘thank you.’ That really means a lot to our officers.”

They have set up a site to help with the medical costs for both the officers.

“These types of things take a toll on your personal finances. When your spouse has to take off work to take care of your needs. So all around its a very stressful time,” Van Houten said.
