MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Mesquite High School died in a hit and run Thursday night.

Authorities said Joseph Huerta’s car broke down on Highway 80 near Sunnyvale.

The 17-year-old was walking along the side of the highway when he was struck by a car and the driver kept going.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department said witnesses believe someone driving a small, dark-colored SUV hit Huerta.

Authorities are hoping for more tips.

“He enjoyed sports, schoolwork and life. I know you guys hear that a lot, but this kid had a tremendous smile on his face,” said Huerta’s soccer coach Sergio Hernandez.
