Now everyone can take notice of Straily, who on television before his latest start saw plenty of highlights touting Yu Darvish being on the mound.

Straily allowed only two two singles while facing 22 batters — just one over the minimum for his seven scoreless innings — and Yoenis Cespedes homered as the Athletics won their fifth straight game, 1-0 over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers and Darvish.

“My confidence was sky high to start the game,” Straily said. “The last few times out, I walked people, hit people, hurt myself. I wasn’t getting hit hard. I was hurting myself. The whole goal today was go out and fill up the strike zone.”

Darvish (7-2) struck out five, but walked three and hit a batter while giving up five hits in six innings. With the help of a couple of defensive plays, the only run he allowed came when Cespedes homered to straightaway center in the third.

Cespedes’ ninth homer went just beyond the reach of Craig Gentry’s outstretched glove. Darvish had turned and watched after the slugger took a big swing and connected.

“As soon as Cespedes hit that home run, I knew just keep it there, 1-0 our best chance,” Straily said.

“The best pitching performance we’ve seen out of him to date, in this ballpark, against a guy that’s probably not going to give up too many runs,” manager Bob Melvin said. “I think he just gained confidence as the game went along. Early in the game, he’s throwing strikes, he’s getting outs, they’re not hitting any balls hard really, and you just kind of grow from that.”

Darvish had won all five of his previous starts this season when pitching after a Texas loss. The ace from Japan had his last seven regular-season starts at Rangers Ballpark, going back to last season, and had entered the game getting a league-high 9.1 runs per nine innings pitched.

“I’ve been really pampered with all the run support I’ve been getting. You’re going to have games like this,” Darvish said through his translator.

Even with consecutive wins to start the three-game series, Oakland still trails the Rangers by 4 1/2 games in the AL West. The Athletics go for a sweep on Wednesday.

Grant Balfour pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save in as many chances this season, and his 27th in a row since April 2012, to close out Oakland’s third shutout of the season. Sean Doolittle pitched a scoreless eighth for the A’s.
Texas was held scoreless for the third time this season.

It was only the 13th 1-0 game ever at Rangers Ballpark, which opened in 1994.

A.J. Pierzynski, the Rangers catcher activated from the disabled list earlier Tuesday, had a one-out single in the third. Jurickson Profar had a single in the sixth, but the rookie was caught stealing when he took off toward second base before Straily threw his pitch.

“I think this can be a jumping off point for him,” Doolittle said of Straily. “That was pretty impressive.”

After winning his season debut April 5 with 11 strikeouts at Houston, Straily was optioned to Triple-A the next day when Bartolo Colon was reinstated from the suspended list. Straily returned in late April, and was 0-2 with an 8.84 ERA in four starts since until dominating Texas.

“I’ve never lacked confidence, but this is definitely the most confident I’ve felt out there,” Straily said.
Darvish, who raised his majors-best strikeout total to 91 in 66 2-3 innings, came out after 101 pitches. He had averaged 121 pitches his last three starts, including a career-high 130 five nights earlier against Detroit in a 10-4 victory.

“I was as usual, nothing affected from the last outing,” Darvish said. “I really begged Wash. I wanted to keep pitching.”

Notes: Rangers reliever Neal Cotts got three outs on six pitches in his first major league appearance since May 25, 2009. Texas purchased his contract from Triple-A Round Rock earlier Tuesday. FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Some of the most compelling images out of Moore, Oklahoma have come from the recovery of students from heavily damaged elementary schools. Those schools did not have underground shelters and, as a result, nine children died.

School officials in North Texas took absolutely no chances today. Cleburne ISD sent students home about an hour after they arrived for school. Despite the fact that there were no major weather events in Cleburne, school and city officials don’t regret their decision to close.

The CBS 11 I-Team took a closer look at schools in our area, uncovering information on which districts have underground shelters, which don’t and why.

Plain and simple — It all comes down to the mighty dollar. Most school districts don’t have underground safe areas or shelters because it’s just too expensive to build them. Instead, they focus on severe weather plans that include hiding in hallways and teaching students to duck and cover.

“Very scary. I have family in Edmund, Oklahoma,” Danae Kranerick, Keller parent, told CBS 11, the day after the Moore tornado. “So, that’s why we’re taking some extra precautions today.”

Worried about Tuesday’s North Texas weather predictions, Danae Kranerick picked up her 16-year-old son earlier than normal.

“Just more of being together as a family, if something did happen,” Kranerick explained.

Keller High School doesn’t have a basement or underground shelter. In fact, there’s only one school in the district that has something like that.

“Ridgewood has one, below ground, they have a shelter below ground. They use some of their classrooms downstairs,” Kevin Kinley, Keller ISD Safety-Security Director, noted.

But Keller ISD isn’t alone; Highland Park also has just one.

“The one school that has the basement is the high school. And that’s certainly limited. Again, the high school has over 2,000 students. So, the basement is not going to accommodate 2,000 students. So, it’s interior hallways is the primary place where you can shelter,” Dr. Dawson Orr, Highland Park ISD Superintendent said.

Both Fort Worth and Dallas ISD also tell us they have a few schools with underground capabilities. While districts like Arlington and Plano don’t have a single school with an underground shelter. And they don’t have any plans to build them any time soon.

“That’s probably a decision that has to be left to a school board. The school board has to decide about the cost of doing that,” Clint Bond, Fort Worth ISD spokesperson, told us.

Instead, school districts like Keller are focusing on taking a proactive approach. That includes more tornado drills and yearly audits on their schools.

“That’s why we have an assessment team now that’s assigned to our schools and that’s actually looking at each school and each campus, looking at security concerns and also better ways to protect our students as far as weather is concerned,” Kinley added.

Arlington ISD:

Shelter in place is the new term for what used to be called duck and cover. Each building has its own plan as to the locations within the building that are “safe” locations during severe weather. We monitor the weather closely, in conjunction with the Arlington Police Department and the National Weather Service. As severe weather approaches, students and staff report to their assigned shelter in place locations and stay there until conditions are safe.

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD:

In the event a tornado warning or a tornado occurs during school hours, your child’s campus will implement shelter-in-place procedures to ensure your child’s safety, in which all students, faculty and staff will take shelter. Therefore, we will not allow any visitors into the building and will not be able to answer any phone calls or emails until the storm has passed. Parents, please take appropriate shelter in your home or place of business in the event a tornado warning or tornado occurs. Stay tuned to your local news and forecast for updated weather information. Once the storm has passed, shelter-in-place procedures will be lifted and parents may pick up their children at that time.

Dallas ISD:

The Dallas Independent School District has a detailed Emergency Operations Plan, formulated to include district wide responses to weather-related emergencies. In the event of a tornado, each school’s Campus Emergency Operations Plan will be implemented.

In addition, the district activates its Emergency Operations Center to track storms as they approach the Dallas area. The EOC communicates directly with schools regarding necessary safety measures that may need to be taken and also directs information through various means to keep parents and the general public informed. Should campuses need assistance because of damage to a building, the EOC helps get resources to appropriate personnel and students.

Students will be kept in a safe area until conditions improve and it is safe to dismiss them. Parents are encouraged to visit the district’s Web site at http://www.dallasisd.org or call the Emergency Hotline at (972) 925-5810 for updates as they become available. Information will also be shared through Facebook and Twitter.

Our schools are required to conduct safety drills each year. The Emergency operations team recommends that schools conduct a shelter in place drill during the spring semester to prepare for tornadoes.

A limited number of schools have underground shelters—one was built with a shelter; the others are schools with classrooms that were built below ground level. Retrofitting schools to provide underground shelters for more than 158,000 students and 20,000 employees would be very expensive.

Highland Park ISD:

All our campuses are equipped with weather radios and two-way radios that enable us to communicate with safety officials from both University Park and Highland Park. We will continue to closely monitor the weather throughout the day.

If the tornado watch is upgraded to a tornado warning, our campuses will shelter in place. If that occurs, doors will be locked and staff members and students will be situated away from windows and doors, so parents and others authorized to pick up students will not be able to do so while the warning is in place. Due to the dangerous conditions during a tornado warning and because the doors will be locked, we ask that parents not come to campus until the warning is lifted. Instead, please find shelter until the dangerous conditions have passed.

If a tornado warning occurs, we will communicate with parents and staff using our emergency text and e-mail notification system. We will also send a follow-up announcement when the warning is no longer in effect and children are cleared to leave campus.

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD:

GCISD takes the responsibility of student safety very seriously and we practice regularly for a variety of situations. All schools across GCISD practice severe weather (tornado) drills a minimum of three times per year. In a severe weather, students are moved to the interior of the buildings in areas away from glass such as interior classrooms, offices or smaller rooms.

For the safety of our students and staff, all schools and facilities will be secured in a lockdown status during a severe weather event. Parents should not come to the school during a lockdown as staff will be assisting students and will not be available to let in visitors. Furthermore, we urge parents to remain in a safe location during a severe weather event for their own safety.

Keller ISD:

District campuses have conducted mandated tornado drills and campus administrators will be monitoring their severe weather radios throughout the day.
Keller ISD’s Severe Weather procedures are set forth in District Administrative Regulation FFF(R3) and outlined below.
When severe weather impacts KISD campuses and facilities, the following guidelines apply:
A. Per KISD safety procedures, during severe weather conditions, students are brought inside the building and outside activities are suspended.
B. Campus administration will utilize local media, weather radio and/or internet for the most up-to-date weather information to be used to determine next steps for their campus/facility.
C. If an Outdoor Warning Siren sounds, a weather lockdown is immediately initiated. Those in portable buildings move into the school. During a weather lockdown internal/external doors are locked, movement inside is limited, and classroom instruction continues until the lockdown is lifted. Parents are allowed to check out their child during weather lockdown.
D. If a Tornado Warning has been issued and the campus is in the immediate path of a tornado per the weather resources mentioned above, students and staff will proceed to designated locations and immediately move to a duck and cover position. When a campus is in duck and cover, parents are allowed to enter the building and take cover in an interior location, but are strongly encouraged not to leave with their student until the weather threat has passed.
E. In the event of a weather lockdown, campus administration shall utilize the School Messenger System, campus email, and campus web site, and campus social media tools to notify parents.
F. Campus administration will communicate immediately and frequently with Central administration (Leadership, Media Services, and Safety and Security) to report current weather conditions and campus action steps taken through email and/or texting. The decision to shelter students and staff in a KISD facility during severe weather can be made by, but is not limited to the following KISD staff:
• Campus Principal (or designee)
• KISD Superintendent
• Deputy Superintendent
• KISD Leadership (Asst. Supt/Directors)

G. KISD Safety and Security: If a parent chooses to have their child dismissed during severe weather, the District will honor the request as long as the parent has signed a District-approved severe weather release waiver. The waiver is valid for one school year and must be submitted annually. Waiver forms are to be kept on file at the campus. Campuses will provide information about the waiver form through campus newsletters, and will provide a copy of the form to parents upon their request. Walkers will be held unless a waiver is on file.
H. Bus riders arriving at school during severe weather conditions with lightning strikes visible must remain on the bus for approximately 30 minutes after the last strike.
I. Bus riders awaiting transportation during severe weather conditions with lightning must remain in the building until it is safe for them to get on the bus.
J. All student and staff after school activities, including professional development, faculty meetings, practices, and contests at home and way will be suspended if a severe weather watch is in effect at dismissal time or goes into effect during the time of activity.

Plano ISD:

District policy CKC (local) states that principals shall conduct emergency drills to assure the orderly movement of students and personnel during severe weather. The accepted and recommended signal for these drills is a series of uninterrupted or continuous short bells. One long bell signal call is clear and students should be returned to class.

1. The principal should select an area of the building to be used for shelter by each class or section of the building. In selecting the sheltered area the principal should look for interior hallways that do not run parallel to the southwesterly direction and are located on the ground floor of the building.

If possible gymnasiums, auditoriums or other rooms with wide free-span roofs should not be used. Also, areas adjacent to a great deal of glass should not be used. It is very important that all staff members and all students know where the designated shelter area is located.
The principal should contact the building’s architect in selecting the safest areas of the building. The district’s director of new construction will assist you in contacting the architect.
2. The principal should designate an outside area, well away from the building and power lines, for assembly should it become necessary to evacuate the building.

3. During periods of severe weather, particularly when a tornado watch is in effect (a tornado watch occurs when weather conditions exist which make a tornado possible) specific staff members should be assigned to monitor the building’s cable television and the city’s early warning sirens/speakers.

Once in the sheltered area all persons should assume a protective position by kneeling on their knees and elbows with their foreheads on the floor and covering their heads with their hands. Persons in wheelchairs or other persons who are unable to assume this position should assume whatever position that affords them the most protection. It is recommended that those in wheelchairs not be removed from their wheelchairs, as this will limit their mobility.

If a tornado or other storm should hit the building, persons should remain in the sheltered area until it passes. The area should then be carefully inspected for downed electrical lines and other hazards. Before leaving, the area should be checked for injured persons. If possible, one staff member should remain with the injured while others direct the remainder to predesignated assembly areas. Once in that area, the principal should assign one staff member to insure that emergency help is summoned.
Next, the principal should have a list compiled of the students who are present, those known to be injured and left in the building and those who cannot be located.

If a tornado appears so quickly that the above action cannot be followed, all occupants should seek cover at once. For those inside the building, heavy furniture provides good protection. Interior closets also provide shelter. Once in the sheltered area, persons should assume the protective position.

4. Anyone caught outside should not attempt to run to the building unless he or she is absolutely sure to arrive before the tornado strikes. Instead, the person should take shelter by assuming the protective position on the ground. If a ditch, creek or other depression is close, the person should take shelter in it.

5. If a school bus is caught in the open when a tornado is approaching, the occupants should be escorted to a nearby ditch or other depression where they should lie face down with their hands covering their head.

6. These procedures should be practiced at the building level at least one time each semester.

It is recommended that these drills not be practiced by transportation unless permission is received from the Director of Safety and Security Services and or the Associate Superintendent for District Services.

Students are not to be exposed to danger or inclement weather for the purpose of practicing these procedures.

State Sen. Dan Patrick said Monday that the 20-member board overseeing the CSCOPE system will vote to effectively gut it later this week. He displayed copies of a letter signed by all board members pledging to scrap lesson plans by Aug. 31.

The announcement comes as the Texas Legislature was poised to pass a $1.1 million plan to provide strict state oversight for CSCOPE, which has drawn sharp criticism from tea party lawmakers — even though much of the general public has never heard of the curriculum system. That bill is now largely moot.

“The era of CSCOPE lesson plans has come to an end,” Patrick, a tea party favorite who heads the Senate Education Committee, said at a news conference.

CSCOPE offers Web-based lesson plans and exams designed to help teachers adhere to state curriculum, especially those working in small districts that have trouble keeping up with Texas’ copious rules. CSCOPE is used in 877 Texas school districts, or 78 percent of districts statewide, and is supposed to be flexible enough for teachers to alter content to meet their individual needs.

The system was created by the 20 state-run service centers around Texas which are designed to support school districts. It offers about 1,600 model lessons that districts can access for a fee of $7 per student, though additional training for teachers on how to use the system can increase the per-pupil price.

But because of intellectual property concerns, many lesson plans weren’t available to the general public. That irked some tea party groups, who worried about “bureaucrats shrouded in secrecy” corrupting state classrooms.

The criticism intensified when parents discovered a lesson plan in which Boston Tea Party participants were referred to as terrorists, and another asked students to design a flag for a new socialist country. Some conservatives also suggested other lessons promoted Islamic values and questioned American patriotism.

Kyle Wargo, executive director of the education service center in Lubbock, said CSCOPE will continue to help districts manage their instructional calendar, but that lesson plans will disappear. He said Aug. 31 is the soonest they can be removed from the Web because of existing contracts.

CSCOPE’s creators were already voluntarily working with the State Board of Education to improve transparency and remove lessons that could be considered offensive — and a bill legally mandating such oversight had been on the verge of passing.

But Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott still threatened to subpoena CSCOPE records, tweeting Monday, “The more we dig, the more problems surface.”

Abbott, a Republican who is expected to run for governor next year, cheered Monday’s announcement via Twitter: “CSCOPE is now ended” while saluting Patrick for “leading the shutdown.”

Patrick’s critics, however, say conservatives don’t trust teachers and school administrators enough to let them create a curriculum system on their own.

Dan Quinn, of the watchdog group the Texas Freedom Network, said ending CSCOPE lesson plans “throws hundreds of school districts under the bus” and will leave districts scrambling to devise their own lesson plans.

“This is what happens when you get enough pressure from outside groups to gin up a witch hunt with distortions and exaggerations,” Quinn said. “School districts are now going to have to come up with resources on their own to replace a service.”

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Fort Worth city leaders are taking a closer look at a problem first brought to light by a CBS-11 I-Team investigation.

As we’ve reported, some dogs that were adopted or rescued from the Fort Worth animal shelter, came down with distemper, and some even died.

On Tuesday morning, the city council held a briefing on the issue after receiving an earful from rescue groups.

In the meantime, more people are coming forward to say their dogs also have the disease.

Danielle Stewart says in the past year, 19 sick dogs she’s rescued from the Fort Worth Animal Shelter have had confirmed or suspected cases of distemper, a fast-spreading neurological disease.  13 have died.

She says, “These cases of distemper have put my rescue at a standstill. We have a $10,000 bill.  We haven’t been able to pull a dog in over two months because we need to pay our bills.”

Rescue groups tell the CBS-11 I-Team at least 43 dogs that came from the city’s shelter have died of the disease.

Besides rescue groups, citizens say they also adopted dogs from the shelter — they thought were healthy — that came down with distemper.

At a city council briefing today, the shelter’s contract veterinarian, Dr. Michael Morris, said of the 3511 dogs that have either been adopted or rescued from the shelter since last September, they only count ten “presumptive” cases of distemper.

Dr. Morris said, “We’ve tracked down a lot of cases where people say their dogs had distemper and it turns out not to be an issue, it wasn’t.”

Rescue groups say no other municipal shelter in North Texas is having this problem with distemper.

But shelter advisory board member and veterinarian Dr. Tim Morton says shelters in other cities are euthanizing more dogs than Fort Worth, and that his city wants rescue groups to take sick dogs.

Dr. Morton said, “People know they’re sick when they get them, that we may be putting out more animals that are sick, and some of those animals might have distemper.”

Councilman Sal Espino says he’s very concerned about the issue.

He said, “We just need to get to the bottom of this. What do the data really show?”

As for Danielle Stewart, she says the city has asked her for documentation that her dogs came down with distemper.  “I contacted the vets office, I got all the positiive lab results, and have since then emailed the shelter all those results.”

She says she’s waiting to hear back from the city.

The city’s code compliance director, Brandon Bennett, says he wants to hear from others who say their dogs came down with the disease after they left the city’s shelter.

Bennett says he wants to receive documentation from them.

The shelter says it vaccinates every dog for distemper, and that it received the highest possible marks during a recent state inspection.

Last week, the shelter met privately with rescue groups to try to resolve their concerns.

MOORE, Okla (CBS 11 NEWS) – For folks who survived the EF-5 tornado that touched down in Moore, Oklahoma, they said the devastation was worse than they remembered as they returned to their homes a day later.

“That’s our house. Everything’s gone,” said Dakota Gotcher, as she scrolled through pictures of her destroyed home on her mobile phone. “That’s the bathroom still standing. My grandpa was under everything right there.”

All that is left behind is splintered wood and shattered walls. The day before Dakota had left her grandfather there because he didn’t want to slow the family down as they rushed to a neighbor’s shelter.

“I’ve never been through a tornado. I thought it was going to be windows busted, a few doors open. And my dad looked at the shelter, he said you don’t want to go out there and he looked like he was going to cry.”

The family emerged to find their neighborhood gone. Dakota assumed her grandfather was gone with it.

“My whole family broke down in tears, ‘cause my grandpa was in the house. We thought he was dead. We thought he was gone.”

But in between their cries, they heard a cry under the bricks.

“As soon as I heard him yelling, I just ran over there, started digging. Yeah, it was crazy,” said storm survivor Elias Sanchez.

“I was surprised he was still alive. I thought I was going to find him dead or something,” said Dakota.

Dakota and her family went back into the neighborhood Tuesday, with her grandfather now recovering in the hospital, to see what else survived. It wasn’t much, some children’s toys and a few clothes, but enough she says, to get by.

The Texas Senate on Tuesday followed the lead of Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston to place the agency under the sunset review process in 2015. That’s where lawmakers review an agency and its policies to determine if changes need to be made.

The House has already passed a similar measure.

Patrick, a Republican, has clashed for years with the UIL over his attempts to allow private schools to compete with public schools for state athletic and academic championships.

Patrick calls the UIL one of the “most powerful” agencies at the Capitol and said it should be under close scrutiny by lawmakers.

The Texas Rangers purchased the reliever’s contract from Triple-A Round Rock before Tuesday night’s game against Oakland. Cotts had ligament replacement surgery in 2009.

Texas also activated catcher A.J. Pierzynski from the disabled list. He was in the starting lineup after being out since May 6 with a strained right oblique muscle.

Right-hander Josh Lindblom, Monday night’s starter, and catcher Robinson Chririnos were optioned to Round Rock.

The Rangers will skip rookie right-hander Nick Tepesch’s scheduled start Wednesday because of a blister on his right middle finger.

Right-hander Ross Wolf will be recalled from Round Rock to start the series finale against Oakland. Wolf’s last major league appearance was 2010.

MOORE, Okla. (CBSDFW.COM) – As the day goes on CBS 11 News crews in Oklahoma have seen and heard stories of heartbreak and hope.

CBS 11 News Reporter Steve Pickett is a Oklahoma native and went back to the Sooner state in 1999 when the city of Moore was hit by another a EF-5 tornado. With all of the similarities and differences between the storms… the heartache is the same.

With more children being affected by Monday’s storm perhaps the hurt is more widespread. But there is no doubt that Oklahoma and Oklahomans are simply in awe by the mere size of this tragedy.

A rainstorm moved through central Oklahoma around Noon on Tuesday. The water fell on the already drenched city of Moore.

But the wet weather didn’t stop Wesley Cordell and his brother James, a Sherman resident, or the other family members from searching through what’s left of their mother’s home. “Tornado come through and my mom was trapped here when I got here,” Wesley recalled as he pointed to a section of the house.

His mother, 74-year-old Johnnie Cordell sat alone inside her home Monday afternoon. The only difference was on this day — there were two demolished cars sitting where the 2nd floor of her home once was. Her son Wesley said, “If these cars weren’t here, I don’t see how everything else could’ve have come [down] right on top of her.”

Every house surrounding Johnnie Cordell’s sat in the tornado’s wide path. There isn’t a whole lot left of those dwellings.

Luckily for Johnnie her son and others pulled her out. Wesley said the only thing on his mind was, “I gotta get to my mom. I just gotta get here… home. Find her, just find my mom. That’s all I had on my mind.”

Many used Tuesday afternoon to return to their homes and assess the impact, and retrieve what they could. They know for others, they are grieving loved ones killed here. Moore resident Mike Hinkley said, “I think right now people are just digging out, wondering what’s the next step and I think that just realizing that God has spared you is a pretty good start.”

As for 74-year-old Johnnie Cordell, after being pulled from the rubble of her home she now sits safe at her daughter’s house safe, with a bump on her head, and happy to be alive.

Updated 7:14 p.m. – McKinney Police have discontinued the Amber Alert.  Isabella has been located and is safe in police custody.  She was found in Laredo, near the U.S./Mexico border.

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - McKinney Police have issued an Amber Alert for 10-month-old Isabella Reyes.

Police suspect the infant was taken by her mother, 24-year-old Sandi Alcocer.  Child Protective Services says the child may be in danger, as custody was recently awarded to another family member.

The baby is described as 17 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes.  Alcocer is 5 feet tall and weighs 130 lbs.

Alcocer is believed to be with an unknown Hispanic male and driving a 2003 white Dodge Dakota and pulling a black flat bed trailer with a blue cover.  They left the McKinney area between 9-11 Tuesday morning and may be headed to Mexico.

“When I was younger it wasn’t like I was acquainted with all that stuff,’’ the Dallas Cowboys standout wide receiver said after the team’s OTA workout at Valley Ranch. I wasn’t used to it. I had to get around people who do it right and I feel like that’s been my stepping stone, these older guys. … I’m listening and looking at people who do it right.’’

And as a result, the young man plagued by “off-field issues’’ hasn’t just found maturity.

“I found myself,’’ Bryant said.

That certainly happened on the field last season, as Bryant caught 92 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dallas expects it to happen again in 2013, as coach Jason Garrett candidly noted, “He can do more.’’

“A lot of that coincides with his development as a person.” Garrett said of Bryant, who he called “a joy to coach. He’s got a number of these other things in his life organized and together, and it makes him a better player.’’

Part of being 24 is figuring out how to handle oneself every day. On the field and off. Bryant remains as playful as ever in the locker room, and as competitive as ever on the practice field. It’s in his dealings with the media that we get to see a glimpse of a boy becoming a man.

“I’m comfortable with my life,’’ Bryant said. “I’m enjoying being in the NFL. I wish it could’ve been a couple years back, but I had to go through a couple of things to figure it out. I think I got it. … This is something I love to do. … I’m all in.’’

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Texas Baptist Men await word to go into action.  They are prepared to send help in the way of cooking food and are turning a full-size coach into a command and communications center, to talk to each other and to other relief agencies.

Cell phone use is among the first things to go in a disaster, so they have satellite phones to maintain contact.

The bus will actually go to Shawnee to relieve the Oklahoma Baptist Men already there, according to TBM’s Disaster Relief Director, Terry Henderson.

“Shawnee was hit by two tornadoes and we’re going to coordinate the efforts in Shawnee, with chain saw units, child care units, possibly a feeding operation  And then as the city of Moore opens up, we’ll probably support some more feeding and resources for them.”

TBM doesn’t just show up; it has to be invited either by FEMA or the other state’s Baptist relief agency. Too many well-intentioned but disorganized volunteers can confuse and slow relief efforts, according to Henderson.  “Once they get settled in and have that information then we’ll be headed up that way. But we’re just waiting for that call.”

While the command and communications bus can be used right away, feeding likely won’t start until local police finish rescue efforts, lift barricades, and let residents back into their homes.

“I think within the first 24-48 hours they’re trying to recover, local government is trying to put people in shelters…and generally within 3-5 days we start rolling our equipment out,” according to TBM Associate Executive Director Mickey Lenamon.

That’s when these feeding kitchens really kick in. Hot meals, three times a day, 40-thousand meals a day from just one 18-wheeler; when all three vehicles are at one place, they can cook up to 150,000 meals daily.

“One person can cook 200 meals every 45-minutes with this equipment,” says Lenamon adding, “We want to tailor it to the local cuisine, whether we’re in Louisiana, Florida, or Oklahoma, we want it to be good hot food, nutritious, for them.”

But it can take 30-50 people to do all the cooking and they’re not just walk-up volunteers. They’re trained and they get regular inspections to make sure the food is safe as well.   It will likely be Thursday before they’re called up and roll out from TBM’s Far East Dallas headquarters.

That was Troy Aikman. This is Tony Romo.

In terms of the flood of outrage and humor directed at Romo, who did not participate in the team’s OTA’s that began Tuesday and who might need a few more weeks to full recover, the difference might just be that Aikman won three Super Bowls.’’

“”You’ve got to be smart this time of year, and I understand that,” said Romo, explaining that if the Cowboys were readying for an actual game, he would be able to participate. “At the same time, you’re ready to go, and you want to get back and get into it.”

Romo’s procedure involved the removal of a cyst from his back, something that caused him to make mention to friends way back on April 10 of a “back problem.’’ I’m told that the projected recovery time of a month suggests something of a complication: “A deep-tissue cyst’’ or “a cyst very near the spine.’’ All still benign. All still nothing to panic over, just as was the case with Aikman’s procedure to have melanoma removed.

But we don’t tell jokes about “America’s Team’’ QBs with three Super Bowl rings. Romo now has as many cysts on his back as he has rings on his fingers. So we question him about it and we clown him about it and we say things like, “Jerry Jones swears that Tony Romo’s cyst has the ability to be just as good as Peyton Manning’s cyst ever was!’’

Oh, and we idiotically question the timing: “Did he sign that six-year, $108-million contract while hiding the cyst news from the Cowboys owner?’’

And we idiotically question his toughness: “There’s a lady in my office who had a cyst removed and was back to work in a day!’’

The Cowboys were rather secretive here, and maybe that merits some criticism. But Romo talked fairly openly of the situation Tuesday after bouncing around the Valley Ranch practice fields, serving as an unofficial assistant, talking over route-running with Dez Bryant, and soft-tossing on the sideline while understudy Kyle Orton took his on-field spot.

There are real issues here, even as Romo will undoubtedly be ready for training camp. The Cowboys are installing some new facets to their offense – Romo may be more involved in gameplan design, the “12 Personnel’’ may be their base offense and coach Jason Garrett seems to be relinquishing playcalling duties to coordinator Bill Callahan – and it would be nice to have the star QB in uniform for all of those things.

“I think the older you get as a football player and a quarterback, I think you gain a little bit of an understanding about the game and how you can develop, through experience, over time,” Romo said of a deepened involvement. “You start to understand the game differently as time passes. … For me, I believe in some things that I think can help us win football games. You have great communication with the coaches. We all talk about things and we go from there. Everyone is just trying to help the football team win.”

As was the case with Aikman, missing a spring workout due to a minor surgery isn’t the same as missing a game. It doesn’t deserve the same level of scrutiny or the same level of outrage or even the same level of clowning …

Though we cannot stop ourselves from noting that even though Tony Romo’s gotten the cyst of his back, the monkey remains.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Clippers will not bring head coach Vinny Del Negro for next season, according to reports Tuesday.

Del Negro had been with the team for three seasons before owner Donald Sterling decided recently that the franchise would not offer their skipper a contract extension.

Del Negro’s current agreement with the Clippers expires in June.

The team went 56-26 in the 2012-2013 regular season, winning their first Pacific Division title.

The Clippers lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of Western Conference playoffs.

A new coach has not been named.

Last year, the two teams met in the Eastern Conference semifinals and between hard fouls, some blood-letting, flagrant fouls, technical fouls, and choke signs, the series saw a little bit of everything.

The Pacers pushed the Heat to the brink only to see LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put the team on their backs and will the Heat to the Eastern Conference Finals last year. This year, LeBron is once again the NBA MVP and Miami should be the heavy favorite again to move to the NBA Finals.

Just don’t tell that to the Pacers.

Indiana head coach Frank Vogel, who needled the referees and the Heat last year before the series started, was at it again Saturday when he said the Heat were “just the next team that’s in our way.”

That caught the attention of the world’s greatest player and LeBron responded, “We’re a great team. We’re very confident. We’ll be ready for them. If we’re just another team, you don’t prepare, you really don’t prepare for just another team. We’re not just another team. You have to prepare for us.”

After losing to the Heat last year, perhaps giving LeBron and company some bulletin board material wasn’t the best move for Vogel. After all, last year Indiana had Miami down 2-1 and still couldn’t close the deal.

But, Indiana also won two out of the three matchups with the Heat this year during the regular season and that could signal problems for the Heat. But, Miami has been playing at an other-worldly level in the second-half of the season and comes into the series winning 45 of their last 48 games.

“If we’re the same team that we were last year, that won’t be good enough,” Spoelstra said. “Period. Fact. That’s why we’ve spent so much time this year trying to develop habits to improve. We don’t feel we’re the same team that played the Indiana Pacers last year.”

Indiana poses one of the toughest challenges for the Heat simply based on their length if nothing else. Between center Roy Hibbert, who stands 7’2” and power forward David West, the Pacers’ front line is one of the best in the NBA.

Adding in a rapidly developing George Hill and Paul George and Indiana’s roster is almost tailor-made to try to take down the defending champion.

Miami will attempt to exploit this by using a smaller lineup and running Chris Andersen and Chris Bosh at Hibbert to pull him out of the lane more on the defensive end, thus opening up holes for LeBron and Wade to exploit.

But Miami will continue to need a complete contribution from the entire roster including players like Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole. Chalmers was almost non-existent in the series against the Bulls and Cole stepped up his game to replace Chalmers’ lost offense.

Cole could be Miami’s x-factor with his speed on both the offensive and defensive end of the court. It could also come down to three-point shooting and Miami would like for Shane Battier to rediscover his shot in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The winner of the series will head to the NBA Finals to battle it out against the Western Conference champion which will be either the San Antonio Spurs or the Memphis Grizzlies.

“It’s really nothing,’’ said Murray, who spent Tuesday at Valley Ranch doing resistance work on the sideline. “It’s a hamstring thing. Very minor, really just a precautionary thing.’’

Murray’s history with injuries is a reason for the club to take care here. He missed six games last year with a sprained foot and the year before as a rookie, his season was ruined by a fractured ankle. At Oklahoma and then in his first training camp with Dallas, he experienced some hamstring issues.

“We don’t want to put any of those guys in a situation where they’re going to take a backwards step,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Obviously you want them all out there, going 100 miles an hour. But you have to understand it is May 21, this is OTA 1, and we have a long way to go. So we’ll take a conservative approach.”

The Cowboys anticipate Murray will begin work next week, being as active as he’s been in recent days participating in the team’s charity Home Run Derby and in its corporate golf tournament.

“Oh, I had do those things,’’ Murray said, indicating that his ability to do so speaks to the lack of severity of the hamstring problem. “I had to support the good causes.’’

OKLAHOMA (CBSDFW.COM) – Just after 3:00 p.m. (CST) officials with the National Weather Service upgraded the classification of the deadly tornado that struck in Moore, Oklahoma to an EF-5, the strongest storm rank on the enhanced Fujita scale.

According to Keli Pirtle, a spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Norman, Oklahoma, the intensity of the storm was deemed even stronger after teams assessed damage on the ground. Initial estimates had the tornado strength at EF-4. The now EF-5 ranking means the Oklahoma tornado has winds in excess of 200 mph.

As of Tuesday afternoon the revised death toll from the state medical examiner’s office stands at 24 people killed – nine of those children. Estimates had the number killed as high as 91 but apparently, in the heat of search and rescue, some victims were counted twice.

Tuesday morning President Obama addressed the country concerning the devastation the moved across the midsection of the Sooner state. “In an instant, neighborhoods were destroyed.  Dozens of people lost their lives. Many more were injured.  And among the victims were young children, trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew — their school,” he said.

Homeowners in south Oklahoma City and in the city of Moore will continue to sift through what’s left of their property. A tornado with winds of more than 200 miles per hour tore a path through the area that in parts is estimated to have been as much as 1.3 miles wide and 17 miles long.

The tornado that hit Moore, a city of some 56,000 people just 10 miles south of Oklahoma City, is believed to have been on the ground for some 40 minutes. Devastation from the storm left interstates and side streets blocked by downed power lines, dead livestock and debris that included cars, trees, and entire sections of homes and businesses.

One of the hardest hit buildings was the Moore Medical Center. There were reportedly some 30 patients inside when the twister hit — all survived. Dan Halyburton, with the American Red Cross, is in Moore near the hospital and said, “That building is made out of steel and concrete, and metal two-by-fours and it just looks like it was completely raked by a giant rake. In the middle of the parking lot there are about 25 cars. It looks like they boxed them together with a bulldozer and then dropped five or six on top of that pile.” In addition to patients at the 46-bed acute care hospital, no medical staff or hospital workers were injured.

The search and rescue effort, which continued through the night, has first responders searching for survivors, both children and adults. The storm path sent the massive twister over two elementary schools.

Teachers and students at Briarwood Elementary took cover as the storm caused severe damage to the building. Part of the roof was tore off of the school and debris littered the area around it, but no one was killed at the location.

It was a far worse situation one-mile away at Plaza Towers Elementary. Officials in Oklahoma say fallen walls at Plaza Towers basically fell one on top on another and were “pancaked”. Once rescuers arrived they formed a human chain and passed survivors from the school to a triage area in the parking lot. On Tuesday, a spokesperson with the Oklahoma City medical examiner’s office said of the 24 confirmed dead seven of them were children found at the school.

Gas leaks are still a concern as teams search by hand and with heavy equipment. At daybreak new search-and-rescue teams arrived, taking over for the estimated 200 people who searched all night. Halyburton said the Red Cross is helping first responders as best they can. “When they’re in there working they don’t want to leave, so the Red Cross trucks come in, we stop by with water, Gatorade, [and] a sandwich. It’s gratifying to be able to provide that kind of service.”

Interestingly, Oklahoma residents with storm shelters are required to register them, so officials have exact GPS locations to search and hopefully find residents safe, but trapped inside by debris.

Monday evening President Obama issued a disaster declaration and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has made federal disaster aid available to the State of Oklahoma.

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time the city of Moore has dealt with a devastating twister. Another EF-5 tornado tore through the city on May 3, 1999. Thirty-six people were killed in that storm and hundreds were injured. That storm had the highest winds ever recorded near the earth’s surface, at 318 miles per hour.

The Thunder announced Tuesday that they’ll give $1 million to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other disaster relief organizations helping after Monday’s disaster in suburban Oklahoma City. Earlier in the day, Durant pledged $1 million to the Red Cross from his Durant Family Foundation intended to match other donations and be an incentive for more people to give.

Red Cross’ regional CEO Janienne Bella said the organization was thankful for Durant’s “generosity.”

“The feeling is they’re going to be a desperate team in their own building,” Bruins forward Shawn Thornton said on Monday before the team departed for New York. “We’re going to have to be a lot better than we were last game; we got the win but we had some areas we could improve on.”

The Bruins won both games in Boston, but were far from perfect. In Game 1 they let New York score in the final seconds of the second period to tie the game at 1-1, and gave up a go-ahead goal just 14 seconds into the third. In Game 2, New York answered each of Boston’s first two goals within minutes, and the Bruins turned the puck over 16 times.

New York hasn’t capitalized on many of Boston’s mistakes so far, but that can all change now that the series shifts to New York.

“A lot of that stuff was of our own doing,” head coach Claude Julien said of the Game 2 turnovers. “I think we can be better in that area, although we played a pretty game, I think most of those things came in the second period. We just have to be a little bit better. I thought our third period was much better in regards to puck management.”

Both teams will make some adjustments, but Julien stressed it doesn’t matter as much what the desperate Rangers will do, but more if his Bruins play their brand of hockey.

“I think it’s what we expect from ourselves. That’s the thing, we always worry about the other team; we need to worry about ourselves,” he said. “When we play well, we’re a good team and we give ourselves a chance to win. It’s more about our expectations right now, that has to be the important topic for us. We need to, obviously, understand they’re going to be better. We also need to be better. We’re on the road, we don’t get the last change, so it will be a tougher situation.”

“It is a chess match, but you can’t be thinking too much on the ice,” said center Patrice Bergeron. “You have to trust your instincts and your system.”

Though Boston has the upper hand now, the series is far from over. The Rangers found themselves down 2-0 to the Washington Capitals last series before storming back to take the series in seven games. The Bruins owned a 3-1 series lead over the Maple Leafs before losing two straight and needed an amazing Game 7, third-period comeback and eventually overtime to advance.

“It’s about realizing the series is not over until you win that fourth game. We know that,” Bergeron said. “They’re going to try to bounce back, and we’re expecting them to come out really hard. We need to make sure we match that.”

The league announced Tuesday that the tournament will change from a double-elimination format to pool play and start on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

Conference spokesman Bob Burda says Oklahoma City leaders asked the Big 12 not to cancel the tournament and allow it to show “the strong Oklahoma spirit and to the resiliency of the Oklahoma people.”

One pool will feature regular-season champion Kansas State, No. 4 seed Oklahoma, No. 5 seed Baylor and No. 8 seed Texas Tech. The other will feature second-seeded Oklahoma State, No. 3 seed West Virginia, No. 6 seed Kansas and No. 7 seed TCU. The championship is Sunday.

NFL owners have voted Tuesday for the 49ers’ new stadium as host of the 2016 game. That facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is due to open for the 2014 season.

San Francisco beat out South Florida, which was stymied in its bid to stage an 11th Super Bowl when the Florida Legislature did not support financing to renovate Sun Life Stadium.

The 2017 Super Bowl will be held in Houston, which also beat out Miami for that game.

The only previous Super Bowl played in northern California was at Stanford Stadium in 1985.

Houston hosted the 2004 NFL championship game.

Earlier Tuesday, owners approved a $200 million loan for stadium construction in Atlanta.

“We haven’t accomplished anything,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “We didn’t get our work done in LA, and that put us behind the eight ball. The fact that we win Game 3, that’s great, but we still are behind in the series and the series is getting shorter. The lifeline wasn’t as long as it was in the past. We’ve just got to find a way to get even. If our intensity or urgency drops because we’ve won a single game, I would be disappointed in our group.”

After taking it easy the day after San Jose’s 2-1 win, both teams stepped up preparation on Monday in advance of Game 4 on Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

The Kings aren’t about to feel complacent, considering they were less than 2 minutes away from losing Game 2 at home and have won just once in 10 road games since March.

“We can’t rest and just be comfortable with being a good home team,” forward Justin Williams said. “We need to be killers on the road. Coming back with a 3-1 lead is certainly something we’re going to do our darnedest to do.”

The Kings came close to getting that elusive road win in Game 3 on Saturday when they fell in overtime after being called for two penalties in the final minute of regulation to set up Logan Couture’s power-play goal in overtime.

The second of those penalties particularly irked the Kings, who contend Trevor Lewis was pushed into San Jose goalie Antti Niemi by Patrick Marleau and shouldn’t have been called for goaltender interference.

That came one game after the Sharks complained about a late delay of game call on Marc-Edouard Vlasic that gave the Kings a two-man advantage and eventually led to two goals that gave Los Angeles a 4-3 win.

The Kings look to rebound from their disappointment the same way the Sharks did from theirs.

“There’s zero momentum,” Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. “Once you get in the playoffs, there’s zero momentum unless somebody is way better than somebody, and as you see, nobody is. If there’s a carry-over, then you’re probably not a playoff team.”

The home teams have won all three games so far this series and both teams are undefeated at home in the postseason this year. The Sharks have been dominant all season on home ice, going 17-2-5 in the regular season that included two wins over Los Angeles.

The biggest reason for the home success has been a potent power play that has been far more efficient at the Shark Tank than on the road. San Jose has scored on an NHL-best 28.4 percent of power plays at home during the regular and postseason compared to just 13.6 percent on the road.

The difference has been even more stark in the postseason where the Sharks are 8-for-20 on the power play at home and just 1-for-16 on the road, including 0-for-7 the first two games in Los Angeles. San Jose did score one goal 5 seconds after the end of a power play in Game 2 against the Kings.

Defenseman Dan Boyle said there was little difference other than the final results on the power play in Game 3, when he got the scoring started with a power-play goal 4 seconds into a man advantage early in the first period and Couture ended the game with a power-play goal in overtime.

“It’s about scoring goals,” Boyle said. “If we don’t score yesterday, you guys would be talking about how bad we are, how much we’re struggling. We had some good looks in L.A., we just didn’t put the puck in the net. The one goal we had, the penalty had just expired.

“The end of the day, you’ve just got to put the puck in the net and the first power play took, what? Three or four seconds. That’s not a good power play, that’s execution. It’s a won faceoff, it’s a guy going to the net. That’s just good execution.”

The Kings could get a boost with the potential return of forward Kyle Clifford, who has missed the past four games with an upper-body injury.

Clifford scored three of his seven regular-season goals this year against the Sharks and all three of his career playoff goals came in a six-game series against San Jose two years ago.

“He can give us that big physical, emotional lift that we can use right now,” forward Colin Fraser said. “He’s a guy that doesn’t take a shift off, and he’s hard to play against. I’ve played with him on and off for two years, and he’s a big, physical player who keeps it simple. You know what you’re going to get out of him every shift.”

Patrick Kane scored 4:35 into the third period to pull Chicago within one. The Blackhawks celebrated as if they tied the game about a minute later, but Andrew Shaw’s goal was waved off because he was in the crease.

Datsyuk’s goal 6:46 into the final period gave the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.

The seventh-seeded Red Wings have a shot to put the top-seeded Blackhawks on the brink of elimination Thursday night in Game 4.

Detroit’s Jimmy Howard made 39 saves and Corey Crawford stopped 27 shots.

Chicago has lost consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months.

The Blackhawks began the lockout-shortened season by setting an NHL record with at least a point in their first 24 games, ended it with a league-high 77 points and avoided having a three-game losing streak during the 48-game campaign.

After a scoreless first period in a hot and steamy Joe Louis Arena, Detroit took a 2-0 lead with a pretty goal and a gritty one.

Nyquist patiently carried the puck from right to left and waited for defenseman Brent Seabrook and Crawford to sprawl out to make a shot before shooting the puck.

Miller crashed the net to stuff the puck into the net after Patrick Eaves got to his own rebound to keep pressure on Crawford. Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival started the sequence with a turnover in the Chicago end.

It was a sixth straight goal for the Red Wings, who lost the opener 4-1 and gave up the first goal of Game 2 before going on to even the series with a 4-1 victory.

Chicago escaped getting shut out when Duncan Keith lifted the puck up the ice, over and past Detroit’s defense and Kane got to it in time to beat Howard with a low shot.

Datsyuk gave the Red Wings a comfortable cushion again, getting off a wrist shot from the left side that went in and out of the net before Crawford saw it.

NOTES: Detroit coach Mike Babcock won his 77th postseason game, matching Chicago’s Joel Quenneville for the most among active coaches and trailing Pat Burns by one victory for 8th place on the NHL’s all-time list. … Chicago hasn’t given up a power play goal in its first eight playoff games, matching the 2001 St. Louis Blues for the longest such streak since 1988, according to STATS. … The Blackhawks put Viktor Stalberg back in the lineup, and scratched Daniel Carcillo, and he got shook up early in the game, missing a check and going head first into the boards.

The American Red Cross announced Tuesday that the gift from The Durant Family Foundation is meant to match other donations and be an incentive for more people to give.

Red Cross’ regional CEO Janienne Bella said the organization was thankful for Durant’s “generosity.”

The Red Cross is accepting $10 pledges from people who text “REDCROSS” to 90999. People can also donate at the organization’s website.

On Monday, Durant sent a message to his 4.1 million Twitter followers with Red Cross donation information.

“This is a great year for family cars,” said Jack Nerad, Kelly Blue Book’s executive market analyst. “There are some new entries in the marketplace that are terrific. Some of the old standbys are also terrific.”

At the top of the list, the Nissan Pathfinder.

“It’s new this year, and we were really taken by the Pathfinder,” said Nerad.

The largest category on the list is mid-size cars. There were four of these vehicles including, says Nerad, the all-new Ford Fusion.

“It’s a very, high-tech vehicle, and offers good looks on the outside and creature comforts on the inside,” says Nerad.

There was only one other American brand vehicle on the list, and it was an interesting choice. Nerad says they included the Chevy Suburban because big families need big vehicles.

“There are a lot of people, my family among them, that like a large vehicle like that, that has great hauling power, great passenger capacity,” says Nerad.

The institute has been running vehicles through a small vehicle frontal overlap crash test, simulating what happens when about 25 percent of the vehicle’s front hits an object.

The latest test crashed 13 small SUVs.

“The bad news is 11 of the 13 did pretty poorly,” said Insurance Institute Research Vice President Joe Nolan. “We only have one good performer, and one acceptable performer.”

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received the “Acceptable” rating. The “Good” rating went to another vehicle made by a smaller Japanese car company.

“The Subaru Forester aced this test,” said Nolan. “It’s the first vehicle to do so in this new crash configuration. In every evaluation of the structural performance, the way the dummy interacts with the restraint system, and all of the injury measures, it scored perfect scores.”

That gives the Subaru Forester the designation of “Top Safety Pick+.” There are now 20 vehicles with that “plus” by their designation. Vehicles that score well in other crash tests, but not the new one, get a designation of “Top Safety Pick.”

Many of the small SUVs in this test remain top safety picks including the new Buick Encore and the totally redone Honda CRV and Ford Escape.

But, Nolan says all could be made safer, if strengthened for this new collision. The Ford Escape, for example, showed some issues that could lead to serious injuries.

“We recorded over three thousand pounds of force going through the driver’s left leg into his hip,” said Nolan. “That’s a poor rating for the protection of the knee, thigh, hip complex. That’s a potentially very debilitating injury.”

The Escape has set new sales records for Ford, which says it believes the vehicle is safe.

“Ford takes seriously every industry development related to vehicle crash performance,” read a statement from the company. “This is the first time IIHS has conducted this type of test on small SUVs. We are reviewing its findings in the context of our current design evaluations. The Escape was rated ‘Good’ for head/neck and chest dummy injury measures and ‘Acceptable’ for lower-leg/foot in this new test.”

The IIIHS says the purpose of the new test is to make vehicles safer. Institute officials say they believe carmakers will work to build vehicles that can pass the test. Nolan says that will save lives, and prevent injuries.

“Our analysis shows that about a quarter of all crashes that result in serious injury or fatality are what we call, small overlap frontal crashes.”

A little bigger and much more upscale, the Cadenza is Kia’s first attempt at keeping that customer who wants to move up from moving out of a Kia store and into somebody else’s entry level luxury sedan. So the first question is, how did they do?

After spending a day rolling around the hills outside of San Diego, the short verdict is not bad.

The Cadenza is a sharp looking car with the distinctive front grille and lamp treatment made a bit more distinctive. A sharp profile with well placed lines and an athletic looking stance give way to a fairly Audi-esque looking rear complete with oval dual exhaust ports.

High marks on fit and finish inside

Inside, the Cadenza gets high marks on fit and finish as well as materials. A 10-way power driver’s seat with heating and cooling and six-way passenger seat with just heating come with the car. The rear seats are also heated. Legroom is more than ample, especially in the rear when they put that extra two inches they stretched the platform.

The dash is well laid out, logical, and Kia’s UVO e-services system is among the best in the business. It takes connecting you to the car to a new level. It also comes with a 10-year free subscription and smartphone app. The fully loaded Cadenza I spent the day in also included a spectacular Infinity sound system and panoramic sunroof.

Under the hood and the drive feel

Under the hood the Cadenza gets Kia’s 3.3-liter 6-cylinder that cranks out 293 horses. Married up to Kia’s 6-speed automatic, it moved the sedan through the hills quite briskly. Paddle shifters are included with every model and give you a bit more of the sports sedan feel. Jumping onto the freeway is done without laboring the engine and passing on a two-lane road when safe is done with confidence that the engine has more to give if you need it.

The ride is generally solid and confident due to a great set of suspension components, although hitting a number of potholes can be a bit jarring. Steering is light, with minimal road feel, but the Cadenza never felt hinky on curves. Braking was solid and confident.

Pricing and gas costs

One of the great things about the Cadenza is that as I said you get bang for your buck, especially when it comes to safety. Distronic cruise control, blind spot warning, lane departure control and a number of other safety systems usually found in cars costing more are in the Cadenza.

Kia starts the Cadenza at $35,100 pretty well loaded. Add technology and luxury packages and you get to $41,100-plus destination. It is without a doubt a lot of car for the money. Fuel mileage figures: 19 city, 28 highway. In my day in the Kia with combined freeway and rural driving, we averaged 22 mpg. The Cadenza uses regular unleaded gas.

An overall impressive drive

The Cadenza is an impressive effort by Kia. In eight hours or so of driving it, I came away with almost the same thought I had when I drove its cousin the Hyundai Azera: a solid effort to create a better than you would expect car. It’s one that should keep the Kia buyer that wants more, in a Kia showroom. How will it do against the Maximas, Avalons, Taurus’ and Impalas of the automotive jungle? Ah…that my friends is the $41,100 question!

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Several schools around North Texas have decided to close early on Tuesday due to reports of severe weather arriving in the area later in the afternoon. The extra precautions are being taken during this round of storms after a deadly tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, on Monday. That twister damaged two separate elementary schools, where kids were pulled from the rubble by teachers, rescue workers and parents. Some of those who died in the Monday storm were at those elementary schools.

If you have a child in school on Tuesday, check the list below to see if he or she will be dismissed early.

• Alvarado ISD: Students released at noon, but parents can start picking them up at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.
• Arlington ISD: Schools are not closing, but are prepared to shelter in place as weather warrants.  After school activities are canceled.
• Carroll ISD: After school activities are canceled.
• Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD: Schools are not releasing students early, and are prepared to follow standard severe weather plans.
• Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth: Students at elementary schools released between noon and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. School staff members will remain on campuses with students who are unable to go home.
• Cleburne ISD: Students dismissed to parents at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Students who are not picked up will be held in a safe area until the severe weather threat has passed.
• Dallas ISD: All after-school activities have been cancelled for Tuesday. School bus routes will run at the regular time.
• Diocese of Dallas Catholic Schools: Elementary students released to parents at noon, but high schools will remain in session. Afternoon activities have been canceled. Students who cannot be picked up will be held in safe areas and provided lunch.
• Ennis ISD: Schools are not scheduled to release early.
• Episcopal School of Dallas: Both campuses closing at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and all afternoon events are canceled.
• Fort Worth Diocese Schools: All campuses will release students between noon and 12:30 p.m.
• Frisco ISD: Schools will not release students early, and will shelter in place if weather warrants.
• Godley ISD: Schools closing at noon on Tuesday. Students who have no place to go will be held safe at the intermediate school campus.
• Greenhill Schools Dallas: Closing early.
• Grand Prairie ISD: After school activities are canceled.
• Grace Academy-Dallas: Closing at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
• Grandview ISD: Students released at noon on Tuesday.
• HEB ISD: All after school activities are canceled.
• Highland Park ISD: Schools are not releasing students early, but are prepared to shelter in place if weather warrants.
• Irving ISD: All after-school events have been canceled. Parents are encouraged to pick up their kids early, if possible, but schools will not be releasing students any earlier than scheduled.  All after school activities have been canceled.
• Keller ISD: Schools are not closing, and will follow standard severe weather procedures.
• Mansfield ISD: All after-school events have been canceled.
• Palmer ISD: Closing at 1:30 p.m.
• Plano ISD: Schools will not release students early, but are prepared to shelter in place if weather warrants. If parents would like to pick up their children earlier than scheduled, they may do so without any penalties. After school activities are on as scheduled.
• Shelton School: Students being dismissed between noon and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
• Red Oak ISD: All after school activities have been canceled.
• Stephenville ISD: Students start being dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
• Westwood School: Closing at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, and all after-school activities have been canceled.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions will offer up the bill Tuesday. The April 17 explosion killed 15 people.

Heritage says that, beginning in 1865, banks could place bonds and other securities on deposit with the U.S. Treasury. Those banks receive notes bearing their names for circulation in their areas. Such banks were known as national banks, and West had three between 1900 and 1934.

The proceeds will go to a fund created by the West Volunteer Fire Department to benefit the families of those killed.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Tuesday that 45-year-old Lamont Ellis of Cleveland was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into jail on a $40,000 bond but is no longer being held.

Authorities say a trooper was fueling his patrol vehicle Sunday at a truck stop in Conway, east of Amarillo, when he saw a motorist nearby acting suspiciously. Ellis was towing a Grand Cherokee Jeep and the trooper allegedly found 17 bundles of cocaine hidden in the vehicle.

Online jail records did not indicate an attorney for Ellis.

Schools districts across the area are keeping an eye on the weather. Some have already cancelled after school activities as a precaution.

So, how should you prepare for the severe weather?

The emergency preparedness experts with FEMA recommend that you keep emergency supplies in your car, just in case. There is a strong possibility that you will be on the road this afternoon or at work.

An emergency kit should include items like a blanket to cover yourself with, a battery-powered radio, water, a first aid kit, and a whistle you can use to alert someone if you need help. A complete list can be found on FEMA’s Ready.gov.

If you do find yourself on a highway when severe weather hits, the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma recommends that you seek shelter in a sturdy building — or underground if possible. Avoid seeking shelter under a bridge, which can create traffic hazards and provide little protection.

If you can’t locate shelter in a timely manner, stay in the car with the seat belt on, put your head down below the windows, and cover your head.

If you live in a mobile home, evacuate the home immediately and seek shelter in a permanent structure.

Additional tips on what to do if a tornado hits while you are at work, in a shopping mall, or out in the open can be found on the Storm Prediction Center Website.

One key factor for the Rangers is the play — and health — of goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist was back on the ice Monday after his rough game on Sunday, in which he also appeared to injure his left shoulder.

He was no worse for wear during and following the hour-long practice ahead of Tuesday’s Game 3 in New York.

“Everybody is sore,” he said. “It’s the playoffs. You can’t just sit out if it’s hurting a little bit.”

Lundqvist said he “landed on the ice awkwardly and it hurt a little bit” in the third period of Boston’s 5-2 win Saturday in Game 2.

“It’s under control,” Lundqvist said.

CBS BOSTON: SEIDENBERG, REDDEN TRAVELING TO NY

Before Sunday, Lundqvist hadn’t allowed five goals in 151 consecutive games, dating to a 5-2 loss at Anaheim on March 9, 2011. He also had never yielded more than three goals in any of his 31 previous games against the Bruins, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Lundqvist gave up 12 total goals in the first five games of the first-round series versus the Capitals before shutting them out in Games 6 and 7. Boston has already registered eight goals against him.

“It’s disappointing to give up five goals, but positioning-wise and reading the plays for the most part was good,” Lundqvist said. “They made some good plays, too, and then there were some unlucky bounces and screens.

“I could probably find excuses for the goals, but it’s not going to help my game. I just have to try to be better and work even harder to see pucks.”

History is hardly on the Rangers’ side. New York is 2-19 in series it trailed 0-2, and no NHL team has won consecutive series after losing the first two games.

Game 4 will also be in New York on Thursday.

“We’ve won games here,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella. “That’s what we have to do. Not win two at home, but we need to win one game at home. And that’s our total focus.”

MOORE, OK (CBSDFW.COM) – Barbara Garcia survived the massive tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma on Monday afternoon. But she lost track of her beloved dog when the tornado hit, leaving little hope that her dog survived.

“I was sitting on the stool, holding my dog — this was the game plan through the years, to go in the little bathroom,” said Garcia to CBS News’ Anna Werner. “The electric went off in the bathroom about the same time I felt the stool come up out of the floor.”

Garcia says she remembers rolling around but never lost consciousness as her house was reduced to rubble. When it was over, her focus quickly returned to her dog.

“I hollered for my little dog and he didn’t answer, or didn’t come. So I know he’s in here somewhere.”

Moments later, an individual behind the camera suddenly yelled “the dog, the dog.”

Garcia turned around, only to find her pet’s head exposed and his body buried beneath a pile of debris.

With help, Garcia immediately began pulling debris off of her dog. who was able to return to his feet. The dog was eventually able to walk free from the structure, much to the delight of his worried owner.

“Well I thought God just answered one prayer to let me be okay. He answered both of them.”
