From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history.

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - Are you one of the millions of Americans who use online dating to look for love? A new scientific study of the popular practice shows when it comes to finding a soulmate, you might be better off searching elsewhere. The study found that online dating is basically a crapshoot when it comes to finding love. “Online dating is a marvelous addition to the ways in which singles can meet potential romantic partners,” study author Dr. Eli Finkel, associate professor of social psychology at Northwestern University, said in a written statement. But “users need to be aware of its many pitfalls.”

More than half admitted describing someone’s prognosis in a way they knew was too rosy. Nearly 20 percent said they hadn’t fully disclosed a medical mistake for fear of being sued. And 1 in 10 of those surveyed said they’d told a patient something that wasn’t true in the past year.

The survey, by Massachusetts researchers and published in this month’s Health Affairs, doesn’t explain why, or what wasn’t true.

“I don’t think that physicians set out to be dishonest,” said lead researcher Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, a Harvard Medical School professor and director of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Mongan Institute for Health Policy. She said the untruths could have been to give people hope.

But it takes open communication for patients to make fully informed decisions about their health care, as opposed to the “doctor-knows-best” paternalism of medicine’s past, Iezzoni added.

The survey offers “a reason for patients to be vigilant and to be very clear with their physician about how much they do want to know,” she said.

The findings come from a 2009 survey of more than 1,800 physicians nationwide to see if they agree with and follow certain standards medical professionalism issued in 2002. Among the voluntary standards are that doctors should be open and honest about all aspects of patient care, and promptly disclose any mistakes.

A third of those surveyed didn’t completely agree that doctors should ‘fess up about mistakes. That’s even though a growing number of medical centers are adopting policies that tell doctors to say “I’m sorry” up front, in part because studies have found patients less likely to sue when that happens.

Not revealing a mistake is “just inexcusable,” said Dr. Arthur Caplan, a prominent medical ethicist at the University of Pennsylvania. Beyond decency, “your care now has to be different because of what happened.”

The vast majority of those surveyed agreed that physicians should fully inform patients of the risks, not just the benefits, of treatment options and never tell a patient something that isn’t true — even though some admitted they hadn’t followed that advice at least on rare occasions in the past year.

Perhaps least surprising is that doctors give overly positive prognoses. It’s hard to deliver bad news, especially when a patient has run out of options, and until recently doctors have had little training in how to do so. But Iezzoni said patients with the worst outlook especially deserve to know, so they can get their affairs in order, and patient studies have found most want to know.

What else might doctors not tell? There are shades of gray, said Caplan, the ethicist. For example, he’s heard doctors agonize over what to tell parents about a very premature baby’s chances, knowing the odds are really bad but also knowing they’ve seen miracles.

Doctors prescribe placebos sometimes, and telling the patient could negate chances of the fake treatment helping, he noted. Sometimes they exaggerate a health finding to shock the patient into shaping up.

And sometimes it’s a matter of dribbling out a hard truth to give patients a chance to adjust, Caplan said: “OK, this looks serious but we’re going to order some more tests,” when the doctor already knows just how grim things are.

Withholding the full story is getting harder, though, Iezzoni said. Not only do more patients Google their conditions so they know what to ask, but some doctors who have embraced electronic medical records allow patients to log in and check their own test results.

Obama’s first North Texas stop will be at Thursday’s dinner hour in Fort Worth, where she’ll preside over a roundtable dinner discussion at a Fort Worth restaurant with parents who are changing habits in their homes and communities.

On Friday, she’ll join chef contestants from past seasons of the Bravo series “Top Chef” and members of the Dallas Cowboys to promote healthier food choices for students in the nation’s schools. The chefs will compete in a health cooking contest with students at the Kleberg Rylie Recreation Center in southeastern Dallas.

Experts said retail prices for beef could climb as much as 10 percent a year in 2012 and 2013, and the increase could be even greater if demand from other countries increases.

Last month the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported the U.S. herd had declined to 90.8 million cattle, 2 percent less than the previous year and the lowest inventory since 1952, when there were 88.1 million.

“We’re producing less beef so prices are going to go up,” Texas AgriLife Extension Service livestock economist David Anderson said.

Ranchers have sold more of their cattle in recent years to meet increased costs for feed, fuel and other expenses. The soaring feed costs come amid heightened demand for corn to produce ethanol and to meet a growing export market.

The situation has been worst in Texas, the nation’s leading cattle producer, and other parts of the southern plains and southwest, where a record drought caused pastures to wither, leaving ranchers with few options but to sell their cattle or pay top-dollar for feed.

There are 1.4 million fewer cattle — a record 660,000 of those cows — in Texas this year compared with the previous year, accounting for about 74 percent of the drop in numbers nationally. The animals were either moved to another state or were slaughtered.

Texas still leads the nation with 11.9 million head of cattle and calves, an 11 percent drop from last January. Cattle numbers plunged 12 percent in Oklahoma, to 4.5 million head, and in New Mexico by 10 percent, to 1.39 million head.

While cattle numbers dropped in those states, they have climbed elsewhere, especially in the Northern Plains where more rain led to plentiful pastureland.

Even in the southwest, there has been some good news, as the USDA reports that producers held onto more heifers, or young cows, than some expected. The January report showed a 1 percent increase over last year’s number of heifers retained.

That could put the industry in position to grow the herd more quickly

Until the cattle supply increases, consumers will see higher prices, said Lane Broadbent, a livestock analyst with KIS Futures in Oklahoma City.

Broadbent said worldwide demand for U.S. beef also could increase in the next couple of years, causing prices to stay steady or rise even if the herd size grows as expected.

“An era of cheap meat might not happen for another two to three years,” Broadbent said. “It’s basically supply and demand, and this USDA report showed that our supplies are going to increase.”

USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam said producers who see good prices at auction might still sell off their heifers. Ranchers must weigh whether they’ll come out ahead by selling those heifers in coming months or hang onto them and sell the calves from the animals.

“There’s potential for increased retention,” Shagam said. “How that evolves during the year will depend on these producer decisions.”

The cattle industry has for decades gone through cycles of expansion and contraction. The U.S. herd typically grows for about 10 years before supplies increase to a point where cattle and beef prices begin to drop. That’s when ranchers begin to sell off their animals and the contraction begins.

“This is free enterprise,” Texas AgriLife Extension Service economist Stephen Amosson said. “Everything goes to the bottom line. If they’d be making a bunch of money they would have been expanding before this.”

Starting in the 1980s and through the 1990s the cycles were influenced by a shift in demand, which brought about big declines in cattle numbers. During that time people began to eat more chicken when the meat started showing up as nuggets, wings and in forms other than whole chickens, Anderson, the economist, said.

The USDA projects per capita beef consumption will drop to 55.7 pounds in 2013 before climbing to 58.9 pounds in 2020. Meanwhile per capita consumption of chicken was forecast to increase throughout the decade, with 2020 showing 91.5 pounds.

Richard Thorpe, a rancher in Winters, about 200 miles southwest of Fort Worth, culled more than 75 percent of his 1,000-head herd because of drought. He plans to slowly rebuild with the animals he kept, and is optimistic now that the long drought is finally over.

“We’ve kept the youngest, best and most fertile,” said Winters. “We have a lot of hope we are through with this horrible drought. What makes it scary to us is we have to have spring grass.”

The Aggies, moving from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference for next season, still need one more game.

Athletic director Bill Byrne says their options for scheduling were limited because of the move, but that they expect to have a game for Nov. 17 lined up soon.

Texas A&M was scheduled to host McNeese State on Sept. 1, but replaced that game with Louisiana Tech on Aug. 30 in Shreveport, La.

They’ll play South Carolina State at home on Sept. 22.

Byrne says the location of their Sept. 29 game against Arkansas still hasn’t been determined, but that it will be soon. It has recently been played at Cowboys Stadium.

The Southeastern Conference commissioner said Wednesday a decision could be made later this year but cautioned it’s premature to speculate on what changes might be made. He says they need time to sit down and analyze plans with discussions needed among the conferences.

“Really a lot of this discussion is premature, and I want to respect the process that we’re in,” Slive told members of the Nashville Sports Council during a question-and-answer session. “We’ve had four-year formats since we started. We’ve done it on the basis of four years, so each four-year period you have to sit down and decide what format is going to be going forward. So we have decided to sit down and talk about this from every different side.”

Slive said they started discussions the day after Alabama beat LSU for the SEC’s sixth consecutive national championship in January with another meeting scheduled later this month. He said there will be several meetings on the topic after he saw no interest from his colleagues or other conferences in pursuing a four-team playoff to decide the BCS champ back in 2008.

The format of pairing four teams playing two semifinals plus the title game was proposed by Slive and the commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference only to be shot down by leaders of the Big Ten, Pac-10, Big East, Big 12 and Notre Dame.

Now the Big Ten is expressing interest in changes.

“What would it look like and whether it’s actually going to happen, all of that is premature,” Slive said. “I think we need the time to sit down and analyze it. We need time to take ideas back to our respective conferences and … a decision to be made sometime later this year as we begin to talk about the … next format.”

The SEC commissioner said they also need to look very carefully at how any changes affect traditions like bowl games. Before the session, he said they have two years left in the current format, leaving plenty of time to work through any changes.

He’s also not sure what prompted the current interest in the plus-one plan.

“It’s been an enormous success for us to have four different teams win the national championship over the last six years has been incredible and unusual. It’s a record that’ll never be broken,” Slive said. “Whatever it is that brings people to the table, I’m glad they’re coming.”

Slive shot down talk of any further expansion. The SEC added Texas A&M and Missouri as the league’s 13th and 14th members with the 2012 football schedules released only a few weeks ago, and conference officials have many more details to handle.

“We’re at 14,” the commissioner said. “It’s going to take us time to absorb. I don’t know if you realize how difficult it is to take two institutions and move them into 12 other institutions whether it’s scheduling or the way we’re working together. So we have our hands full for now.”

Slive’s appearance came in part to help promote the SEC’s women’s basketball tournament in Nashville starting March 1. Slive noted between 2001 and 2019 the league will wind up playing 11 basketball tournaments in Nashville with the men’s tournament coming to town in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.

WACO (AP) - Country singing star Trace Adkins says he’s had a crush on Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey ever since they both attended Louisiana Tech in the early 1980s.

Adkins has dedicated at least one song to the former Lady Techster star, but the former Louisiana Tech football player never approached her until recently.

Mulkey has invited Adkins to sing the national anthem before Saturday’s home game against Texas A&M.

Mulkey tells the Waco Tribune-Herald that she had invited him to sing once before — at the Baylor-Connecticut game in December. A schedule conflict got in the way of that gig, however.

“Kansas did a tremendous job bouncing back after their tough game with Missouri,” Drew said. “We need to do the exact same thing this Saturday.”

Or the sixth-ranked Bears will have consecutive losses again.

Baylor lost 68-54 on Wednesday night, its second lopsided loss in just more than three weeks against the seventh-ranked Jayhawks, who were coming off a loss at fourth ranked Missouri. That is where the Bears play Saturday.

Jeff Withey scored a career-high 25 points for the Jayhawks (19-5, 9-2 Big 12), who never led until a 14-3 spurt over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the first half with Thomas Robinson sitting on the bench with two fouls. Kansas then scored 14 points in a row early in the second half, with half of those coming on one possession.

“We’re all embarrassed and disappointed by our play,” Drew said.

The Jayhawks lost 74-71 at Missouri on Saturday, when the 7-foot Withey missed his only shot and was scoreless. They now have a share of the Big 12 lead with the Tigers and haven’t lost consecutive games in more than six years — a span of 228 games since January 2006.

“Of all the things that these teams have accomplished, that may be one of the more impressive ones,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Baylor (21-3, 8-3) was 17-0 with the longest winning streak in school history before a 92-74 loss at Kansas on Jan. 16. The Bears followed that with a one-point home loss to Missouri.

In the Jan. 16 game against Baylor at home, Tyshawn Taylor and Thomas Robinson had combined for 55 points and both matched career highs for field goals made. Taylor had a career-best 28 points in that game and Robinson had 27.

Taylor finished with 19 points this time, his ninth consecutive game with at least 15. Robinson, the only Big 12 player averaging a double-double, had 15 points with 11 rebounds.

Pierre Jackson led Baylor with 16 points, while Quincy Acy and Cory Jefferson had 11 each.

Baylor worked the already raucous sellout crowd of 10,344 into a frenzy by scoring the first seven points. Self called timeout less than 2 minutes into the game.

The opening play was an alley-oop pass from Jackson to Perry Jones III for a slam dunk. Jackson then penetrated for a short floater, and the Bears were up 7-0 when Jackson had another assist, a bounce pass to Quincy Miller for a 3-pointer from the right wing.

Neither Jones, the preseason Big 12 player of the year, or Miller had another field goal. Miller came out for good after a flagrant foul with 16:38 left.

After making its first three shots, Baylor missed the next five and Kansas got even at 7-all when Withey made two free throws. But the Bears pushed back ahead 19-9 after Jackson’s alley-oop pass to Acy for another rim-rattling dunk that reignited the fans, before Jackson stole the ball from Withey and scored on a baseline floater.

“Up 10 with 9:41 to go, and really the end of the first half was the beginning of the turning point,” Drew said. “We should have finished with momentum going into the locker room. We didn’t. … And then the beginning of the second half, we get a steal to start the second half. And then from there, nothing went right.”

Withey had a turnover to start the second half before Jackson came away from a scrum on the floor with the ball for a Baylor layup.

Kansas then scored 14 points in a row, a stretch started by Withey’s layup before he added a three-point play.

Withey then had consecutive steals that led to jumpers by Robinson, who fouled making the second basket. He converted the three-point play and it became a seven-point possession when Quincy Miller’s foul during the free throw was called flagrant after officials looked at replay.

After Withey made the technical free throw, Tyshawn Taylor’s 3-pointer with 16 1/2 minutes left pushed Kansas to a 47-32 lead.

“That seven-point possession took a lot out of us,” Jackson said. “We just didn’t answer back after that.”

Withey had already matched his previous career high of 15 points on a free throw with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half to get Kansas within 30-25. He then blocked a shot, which led to a 3-pointer by Conner Teahan. Withey then made a tying layup with 1:34 left.

The Jayhawks finally led on Teahan’s 3-pointer in the final minute for a 33-30 halftime lead.

“I’m very disappointed we lost at home,” Acy said. “We made a couple of mental mistakes at the end of the first half, and the second half, we started out with a good stop then let one mistake lead to two. They got some easy transition buckets and we couldn’t answer back.”

LaMarcus Reed added 18 points and Cameron Catlett had 12 for the Mavericks (18-5, 10-0 Southland), who have beaten the Bearkats (9-15, 3-7) twice during the streak.

Marcus James led Sam Houston State (9-15, 3-7) with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Konner Tucker added 17 points and Darius Gatson had eight assists.

The Bearkats trailed led 37-28 at halftime before pulling within two early in the second half. Ingram responded with a pair of long 3-pointers to get Texas-Arlington’s lead back up to 50-42.

The Mavericks shot 51 percent from the field, including 10 of 21 shooting on 3-point attempts. Sam Houston State was just 4 for 17 beyond the arc and shot 41 percent overall.

Nyakundi was 6 of 13 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Jeremiah Samarrippas and Aliaksei Patsevich added 10 points apiece for the Mustangs (11-13), who shot 52 percent from the field.

J.R. Cadot led the Horned Frogs (13-10) with 14 points, and Amric Fields and Garlon Green scored 10 each.

TCU led 59-58 after two Fields free throws with 2:06 to play, but a Giles 3-pointer gave SMU the lead for good. Patsevich added a layup, and he, Nyakundi and Samarrippas each hit two free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

This is the 10th straight year the Metroplex rivals have met as nonconference opponents; the teams played together in the Southwest and Western Athletic conferences from 1923 to 2001.

On Wednesday night they finally fixed that problem.

Kelsey Bone and Karla Gilbert scored 14 points apiece to lead No. 15 Texas A&M to its fourth straight win, 67-36, over Kansas State.

Texas A&M led 39-19 at halftime and used a 12-5 run early in the second half to extend its advantage to 51-24. Tyra White had five points to lead the Aggies in that span.

“We talked about not taking our foot off their throats,” Bone said. “(associate head) Coach (Vic Schaefer) told us at halftime: `You want to wake some people up and get some people’s attention, hold them to 19 more points.”‘

Instead they limited the Wildcats to just 17 to leave them with their lowest point total of the season.

“We’re getting mentally tough,” coach Gary Blair said.

The win leaves the Aggies (17-5, 8-3 Big 12) in second place in the Big 12 entering Saturday’s game against league-leader and top-ranked Baylor. It will be the first meeting between the teams since A&M’s win in the regional final last season en route to its first national championship.

Brittany Chambers had 11 points and was the only player with double digits for Kansas State (15-8, 6-5).

Blair rotated the 6-foot-4 Bone and 6-5 Gilbert and the duo proved to be a nearly unstoppable combination inside. The two helped the Aggies outscore Kansas State 44 to 6 in the paint.

“The play in the first half of Kelsey Bone and Karla Gilbert was really significant, just establishing how much they wanted to own the paint on both ends of the floor,” Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. “Those two stepped up their game and took control.”

Blair was impressed with the dominance of Bone and Gilbert.

“That’s the best we’ve looked all year at that position,” he said. “They both played very well and they were aggressive.”

The Aggies also took advantage of 23 turnovers which they turned into 29 points.

“They played a great defensive game,” Chambers said. “We just didn’t play tough tonight at all. We let them dictate every aspect of the game.”

White added 13 points and had 10 rebounds and Adaora Elonu had eight points for Texas A&M.

Kansas State won this year’s first meeting 71-69 in overtime in the Big 12 opener for both teams. On Wednesday the Aggies were in control from the start and the Wildcats never got closer than 18 points in the second half.

Patterson raved about how much Bone had improved since that first meeting, but the player gave her team credit for the change.

“I think it just goes into the chemistry that we’re building with one another,” Bone said.

The Aggies led by five points in the first half before using a 16-2 to extend their lead to 33-14 with three minutes remaining in the first half. Alexia Standish had two 3-pointers early in that run.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas Police Department has launched an investigation into one of its own officers after a fatal auto-pedestrian accident last month.

Officer Bryan Crenshaw was behind the wheel of his squad car January 22, when he struck and killed 43-year-old Beverly Kirk in the 9900 block of Bruton Road.

Crenshaw, who was responding to a disturbance call, did not have his lights and siren on when Kirk stepped into traffic and was struck.  She died at the scene.

“Through the accident reconstruction process, it is estimated that Officer Crenshaw was traveling from 41 to 43 mph at the time of impact,” said Lt. James “Scott” Walton, a Dallas Police spokesman. “The posted speed limit was 35 mph. The Internal Affairs Division will be conducting an administrative investigation into Officer Crenshaw’s speed at the time of the accident.”

There was no police dash camera on Crenshaw’s squad car, Walton said, and the Medical Examiner’s toxicology tests indicated Ms. Kirk had a blood alcohol content of 0.25 and was positive for the presence of cocaine.

“This was a tragic accident and the Dallas Police Department wishes to convey its condolences to all members of Ms. Kirk’s family on the loss of their loved one,” Walton said.

DENVER (AP) – Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and the Dallas Mavericks snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the undermanned Denver Nuggets 105-95 on Wednesday night.

Vince Carter added 17 points, and Shawn Marion and Rodrigue Beaubois added 13 points each for the Mavericks, who defeated Denver for the first time in five tries.

Rudy Fernandez and Al Harrington each had 17 points off the bench to lead the Nuggets, who lost their fourth straight. Nene had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Ty Lawson had 16 points along with 10 assists for Denver.

Arron Afflalo (left ankle) and Nene (left heel) returned to the Nuggets’ lineup after sitting out Monday night’s loss to Houston, but Denver was still without leading scorer Danilo Gallinari (left ankle), along with Timofey Mozgov (left ankle). PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – Rallying before an enthusiastic crowd of at least 1,000 people in Plano Wednesday night, Rick Santorum is hoping his GOP presidential campaign will now catch fire.

Earlier in the day, I sat down with him for a one-on-one interview.

Jack Fink: Why do you think your message resonated with voters last night in three states?

Rick Santorum: We’re talking about big things. We’re talking about a vision for this country. The problems this President brought upon us are not just economic. it’s more than that. We’re talking about an infringement of fundamental liberties here. The president is crushing our businesses because he believes he knows best and that bureaucracies can and should run our businesses and our healthcare system and even people’s lives.

Fink: How will you capitalize on your momentum now?

Santorum:  Well, we’re raising money now, and that’s a very good thing. We’re going to head to Oklahoma tomorrow, and that’s a Super Tuesday state. We believe we can do exceptionally well in Oklahoma. Head to Michigan and Ohio, the Midwest has been kind to us so far.

Fink: What do you say to analysts and Republicans that say Gov. Romney still has the money and organization that he’s still likely to win – what do you say to them?

Santorum: All of those analysts and experts predicted I wouldn’t win any of those primaries last night, so I don’t pay much attention to analysts.

Fink: You’re likely going to face another barrage of attacks from Mitt Romney, and how will you respond? How do you convince voters you can beat President Obama?

Santorum: The best way to beat President Obama; you’re not going to beat President Obama by outspending him. Mitt Romney’s key so far is he’s outspent his opponents 5 to 1, and just beat them up.

Romney led the most recent poll in Texas, but that’s old now. The redistricting fight has delayed the Texas primary until April 3, but it will likely be later.

Santorum says the sooner the better: He thinks he will do very well in the state.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dequin Montgomery has had to chart his own path in life.

After his mother was violently ripped from him, he’s learned to go it alone.

The memories remain, though.

They’re mostly the smaller things that people tend to take for granted. The things that feel so natural they get tucked away.

He mentions the way his mother’s face lit up after he finished a drawing. The way she helped him color, or welcomed him in from playing outside.

Those linger.

“It’s the little things; like someone that actually believes in you as you’re doing things,” Montgomery said. “But now it’s as if … all I remember is what happened to her.”

But her violent, tragic end is starting to dominate the picture.

Montgomery is 47-years-old now. But what happened 41 years ago is what shook his world.

“You don’t know what death is at six years old,” he said. “It still haunts me.”

Montgomery’s mother, Carolyn Montgomery, worked as a cocktail waitress at an upscale North Dallas country club to support herself and her son.

They lived in a nicely kept two-bedroom apartment at what was then called the Sherwood Forest Apartments off Northwest Highway.

She was kind, pretty and young –– but her and her son’s futures were stolen on August 8, 1971.

“She comes home late at night, sits down in her apartment,” said Lt. David Pughes, who oversees homicide cases for the Dallas Police Department. “She’s just relaxing after a long night’s work.”

Then the 20-plus year veteran continued: “What we don’t know is at some point someone comes to the apartment.”

Someone stabbed Carolyn Montgomery and left her to die on the floor of her own living room.

“We believe that the knives used were just regular kitchen knives from her kitchen,” said Pughes. “When police arrived you had the larger knife still in her throat and the smaller knife in her abdomen area.”

The stab wounds were extensive; portions of her body were mutilated.

“It makes you think there was something very personal going on inside the mind of the killer,” Pughes said.

Carolyn was murdered while six-year-old Dequin was sound asleep in the back room. He didn’t hear a thing.

And while the boy slept, the killer draped a blanket over Carolyn Montgomery’s lifeless body and fled.

When Dequin wandered into the den the next morning, he thought his mom was asleep.

“There was a blanket and everything else,” said Dequin Montgomery. “I thought she’s sleeping on the floor so I went out to play.”

When he came back inside, his mother was still hidden under the sheet. He sensed something was wrong and ran to a neighbor for help.

“The neighbor came over and she just screamed,” said Montgomery. “She grabbed me and I remember her holding me, holding me; holding me so tight.”

But the killer left a piece of evidence in plain sight that’s haunted investigators for more than 40 years. It’s only five words, but they’re never far from Dequin Montgomery’s mind.

“The note says, ‘The wrong one I’m sorry,’” said Lt. Pughes.

There it was, an apology carved into the back of a picture frame and left in plain view.

“It’s extremely baffling,” said Pughes. “You don’t get a note left at a crime scene very often.”

Carolyn Montgomery had a roommate at the time. She worked as a cocktail waitress at the same country club.

She wasn’t home the night of the murder.

“That note would lead you to believe the roommate was the intended target,” said Pughes. “But those leads didn’t pan out.”

Police looked at more than a dozen suspects, analyzed fingerprints, blood and both murder weapons. But forensic technology wasn’t available in the 1970s.

Much of the evidence has since been contaminated.

There was even a question of whether the note was intentionally planted to throw police off.

And so 41 years after her brutal murder, Carolyn Montgomery’s fate is sealed within a cold case.

“She lived until she was 28, that’s it,” said Dequin. “So whoever is out there that did this, they had a full life.”

Dequin Montgomery still wants justice for his mom. The six-year-old boy who lost his innocence that day wants answers.

Or, as he put it: “Closure. For it to be solved. It’s a mystery.”

There is a new reward in Montgomery’s case. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest or indictment.

“What did she do to deserve this? Montgomery asks.

“Sounds like a monster, for sure.”

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – On a ride along the Dallas Area Rapid Transit rail system, commuters didn’t list shootings or killings as their top safety concerns for the transit system.

Juvenile delinquency was a common mention; as was lewd conduct, foul language and clear violations of DART’s code of conduct. But not violence.

Some riders, like a woman named Susan who declined to give her last name, believe the transit agency proudly wears the label of indifference when it comes to ensuring passengers ride on a trouble-free bus or train.

“Police presence doesn’t just mean visible uniformed officers. It means things are fairly and firmly taken care of,” she said.

The security for DART routes, stations and vehicles has come under scrutiny after the fourth spurt of violence in three months at DART entity.

On Tuesday, an armed gunman opened fire on a DART police officer. One bystander was killed and another was shot.

Transit officials increased police patrols along rail stations last month after the shooting death of a man at the Downtown Pearl Street station.

Currently, the police presence levels will remain enhanced.

“There is an effort to have officers on as many platforms as possible, on trains, buses. We’re using K-9 units. We have undercover officers riding on buses and trains”, DART spokesman Mark Ball said Wednesday.

But the 200 police officers for the transit system still face a variety of criminal acts.

Last year, DART reported 266 assaults, and 129 robberies. Rider Ron Jackson says the security force for DART may be overmatched because of growing criminal behavior.

“We have a lot of riders and they’re armed. The police do what they can do, but they can only do so much”, Jackson said.

Critics claim the agency lacks the resolve to ensure security personnel is present on trains and rail line stops.

Late Wednesday, DART officials said the Dallas Police Department and the TSA may provide plans to team with DART to improve public transit security.

Currently, 76,000 people ride the light rail line daily. One commuter said, “I never see an officer when I need one, and the bad guys know it”.

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – Parents and students at six schools in Plano have been placed on alert regarding suspicious persons approaching children. The six incidents have occurred since Jan. 1.

“To have as many as we’ve had over the short time is unusual,” said Plano Police spokesman David Tilley.

The Plano Independent School District sent e-mail alerts to the parents with students who attend the following schools:

• Davis Elementary, at 2701 Parkhaven Dr. 
• Bethany Elementary, at 2418 Micarta Dr.
• Saigling Elementary, at 3600 Matterhorn Dr.
• Haggard Middle School, at 2832 Parkhaven Dr. 
• Rice Middle School, at 8500 Gifford Dr. 
• Schimelpfenig Middle School, at 2400 Maumelle Dr. 

Plano police say the cases do not appear to be related. However, detectives say in at least one of the incidents, the suspicious people were a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl who were in a white Sport Utility Vehicle.

Police say the teenagers approached two children and asked them to get into the vehicle, but the children ran. Officers say the teenagers were playing a prank on the kids and have not been charged.

Plano resident Susan Cure said she received two notices, one from Plano ISD and the other from her neighborhood association.

“You know, it’s unfortunate and it’s sad that we have to do these things to teach our kids about these things,” she said. “But it is what’s happening in our world and I’m not naive about it.”

She said she immediately went over the ground rules with her 12-year-old son about the dangers of strangers.

“If someone approaches me, don’t just expect it to be normal, be aware that this is happening,” said her son Evan, a student at Haggard Middle School.

Instead the meeting took a turn and became a debate on whether public charter schools hurt the DISD.

“I’m asking please do not give monies to uproot education in our community,” said Dallas resident Shirley Daniels, who is critical of the public charter school expansion, especially when the DISD is preparing to close down schools.

Other residents echoed her criticism.   “Our city does not need to get into competition against the Dallas Independent School District,” said Marion Bennett.

Holsey Hickman added his concern.  “Now they’re coming up with a system to profit off the minds of our children, for profit.”

Rena Honea, president of the Alliance-AFT, a teachers labor group, was also critical.  “The charters compete with our public schools in the Dallas ISD.  They recruit students that would otherwise attend Dallas ISD schools,” she said.

Some councilmembers echoed the same concerns.   “I think that we are not giving our public schools the role that it needs and the support that it needs,” Carolyn Davis said adamantly.

Dallas City Councilmember Angela Hunt wondered aloud why there was such a rush for the non-profit corporation vote, since the proposal didn’t come in until last Friday.

“I’m not clear on why we would be moving forward in endorsing the charter school concept when we have DISD schools shuttering their doors.”

Mayor Mike Rawlings staunchly defended the proposal.  “I’m not going to personally stand to let poor people get bad education anymore,” he declared.   The discussion seemed to bring him to the verge of tears.  “Guys,” he pleaded to the council and audience, “we’ve got to come to terms with this. This is not about politics. This is not about neighborhoods. This is not about the old way of doing things. This is about the kids.”

Rawlings supports the concept of Uplift Education, which sponsors nine charter schools in Dallas-Fort Worth.   Uplift’s very demanding curriculum and goal is for every graduating senior to go to college.  The schools tend to fit into whatever spaces are available.   In the case of a West End academy, it’s the first floor offices of a Dallas West End parking garage.

Uplift routinely issues bonds, but now federal stimulus funds allow those bonds to be tax exempt if Dallas will create an umbrella-sponsoring corporation, at no cost or liability to the city.

But many speakers at council see the schools as a threat and blame them for some upcoming DISD shutdowns.  One resident also took the council to task because a proposed school is to be set in Deep Ellum.

“We think this is a terrible idea to have this school in Deep Ellum,” said neighbor Eric Wilson.  “It is an entertainment district; many of them are alcohol-related.  It’s a no-brainer that it shouldn’t be there.”

But Uplift’s CEO said it is compatible with multiple venues because it is a non-profit and money saved will go to improved buildings and teacher salaries.

“We are absolutely committed to the success of education in Dallas and we want to see DISD thrive as well,” said CEO Yasmin Bhatia.  “We just learned about all of the rules behind this new source of bond financing; and as soon as we learned there was a requirement to bring it forward to the city we brought it immediately forward to the city, to ask for their help.”

The council ultimately deferred the item for two weeks to allow for additional study and neighborhood comment.
