One of the Navy’s newest warships, the USS Fort Worth was commissioned in Galveston Saturday morning. On Monday the ship will leave for San Diego, where it will be based.
People waited in line on a pier in bright Gulf Coast sunshine for hours Thursday to get a tour of a unique visitor to Galveston.
The public has been invited to inspect the latest Navy warship — one with a Texas twist. The USS Fort Worth is scheduled for commissioning in ceremonies Saturday in Galveston.
The official anchor dedication ceremony for the USS Fort Worth was held today at Veterans Memorial Park. After an outpouring from leaders and residents, construction on the USS Fort Worth began in 2009, but the responsibilities don’t end with an anchor or dedication ceremony.
A 378-foot military ship named for a North Texas city will be commissioned this fall. A ceremony is planned September 22 in Galveston to commission the USS Fort Worth.
