Located in the historic Oak Cliff part of Dallas, The Texas Theatre opened to much fanfare in 1931. The renowned aviator and billionaire Howard Hughes briefly owned it. The opulent inside contained opera seating and state-of-the-art projection and sound equipment. President Kennedy’s assassination changed everything for the theater when Lee Harvey Oswald was caught inside. Then, the once vibrant movie house was concealed by a Spanish style stucco re-design. Saved in 2001 by the Oak Cliff Foundation, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. In 2010, Aviation Cinemas Inc. took over the lease and it became a new cinema and event venue. It now shows indie films, documentaries, campy cult films and classic movies.
