It is said that one can measure the advancement of a society through its appreciate of art. One look at the museums in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and one can tell that it is a mecca of cultural arts. Read on for some of the best permanent exhibits that grace this fortunate area.

Perot Museum of Nature and Science

The newly opened Perot Museum of Nature and Science is the crown jewel of Dallas. From the moment you walk onto the property, you are surrounded by interactive art and science pieces. The glass structure that juts out of the side of the building is the 54-foot continuous escalator that offers spectacular views of the city as you ride up to another floor of discovery. One can don a pair of 3-D glasses and fly like an eagle (watch out for the pine trees). Or, you can don a lab coat and work with museum staff and conduct experiments to learn about the body. Think you can outrun a Tyrannosaurus Rex? You can find out on a timed trial running track. You can also explore the Earth, weather patterns and natural resources in the various halls that make up the rest of the museum.

Ever heard of Mentawai Islands? The chain of 70 islands off the western coast of Indonesia is known for more than just surfing. It is also known for art. Amongst the museum’s collection are art pieces from the Mentawai Islands. It is the unique pieces, discovered from all over the world, that make the Dallas Museum of Art an appreciated venue. American, African, Asian and European paintings and sculpture are also part of the museum’s permanent collection. Hands-on, free art classes for adults and children take place year round. The museum has recently made general admission free so the world can enjoy its many collections.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of the downtown Dallas business district located in the Arts District is an oasis. The Crow Collection of Asian Art showcases the art of Japan, China, Southeast Asia and India. The permanent exhibits are a vast personal collection of Trammell and Margaret Crow. This three-story museum provides a tranquil look at art from centuries ago. While admission is free, there is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $5 for seniors.

The Nasher Sculpture Center offers those that are looking for something different a place to find it. From extremely detailed architectural sculptures to large outdoor installations that are several feet tall, there is truly something unique at the Nasher. The first Saturday of every month is a designated free day. Come in to be immersed in the beauty of this art for no price.

China, France, India, Iraq, Spain, Japan, Greece, Italy, England and all points in between are part of the Kimbell Art Museum’s permanent collection. One can travel through history in any country. Though the museum is small, it has a very impressive permanent collection. The museum offers half-price admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
