The Ride
The Driver: Josh
Car in Question: 2009 Kia Spectra
Spotted at: Deep Ellum, Dallas, TX 75226
Odometer: 38,000
Car’s Nickname: Gia the Kia

Q: This looks like a sweet ride. What can you tell us about it?

A: It’s a 2009 Kia Spectra. It had four miles on it when I bought it. Now we’re up to 38,000. I used to have an SRT 4, a Dodge Neon that Dodge took to its high tech division and stuck a huge engine in there, wheels, exhaust, and made it really fast. Kia had a car coming out called the Koupe. I was planning on getting one. I had been following along with the concept and the production online. On Friday the 13th, I was in a really bad car accident with the SRT 4, which explains my piston tattoo with a 13 on it. But the Koupe wasn’t out yet, so I just got a Kia anyway.

Q: Unlucky for some. You love your Kia?

A: I love it. This is actually my third car like this. I had this car before the Neon, and before that, I had the hatchback version of it. I kind of wish I had gotten the hatchback version again. I was like, why would I get the exact same car? BNow I kick myself for it. I want my hatchback back!

Q: Where did you buy her?

A: Central Kia. My mom bought a new one at the same time I bought this one, so when you buy two new cars at a dealership, they’ll kind of do anything for you. So we got a really great deal on both cars and we got a lot of add-ons for no charge. Plus, that was where I’d bought both of my other Kias.

Q: Does this one have a nickname?

A: Yes. Gia the Kia. Have you ever seen the movie “Gia”? Gia was a real life person. She’s dead now, but Angelina Jolie played her. She was a model. I got this car when I started modeling, so Gia was it. They’ve all had names, though. There was Aliyah the Kia. There was Mia the Kia. This is Gia the Kia.

Q: And they are all female?

A: I mean, they don’t have on car bras or anything, but yeah. I dunno. Everyone always nicknames boats and everything and they’re always “she,” so, I dunno why.

Q: Does she have a theme song?

A: “Forever” by Chris Brown. She has limo tint and my friends and I were out joyriding and it has a really good sound system. We had the windows down. There were two of my friends in the backseat. I always have couch pillows and a magazine in the backseat. Well, anyway, everyone was all propped up against pillows and the radio was up really loud and it was that song. My friend told me to turn it down and she was like, “Does anyone else feel like they’re in a gay lounge or something like that?” We all started laughing, so now we call it Club Kia when that song comes on.

Q: That’s quite the story.

A: I have emotional bonds with my cars. They all have stories and are like another friend to me.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: I think Kias are really underrated. They’ve got some top designers working for them now and they’re actually good cars. The guy who designed Audis and Porsches, his name is Peter Schreyer, has been designing Kias since 2006. They’re great cars!
