Men’s trends are in the summer fashion forecast. If you are tired of wearing (or ladies, if you are tired of seeing!) that same, worn-out golf polo and cargo shorts, this is the perfect season to embrace the fashion change and add a little flair to your tired summer wardrobe. Here are my top men’s fashion picks this season and how to wear them.

Plaid continues to live on as a go-to pattern for men. Whether you prefer shirts embellished with pockets and pearl snaps, or you favor a plainer plaid, stores are filled with a variety of options for every man’s fashion taste. Try pairing your favorite plaid shirt with neutral shorts. Think grey, black, brown, khaki and even white shorts (depending on your level of fashion fearlessness and your willingness to launder frequently). Or, for an evening out, partner plaids with your favorite pair of denim. Check out my favorite plaid about town, they can range from $25-$75 depending on what brand you pick up.

If your closet is filled with a plethora of khaki shorts, it’s time to add a new option to your summer wardrobe. Patterned shorts are ideal for men of all ages and fashion preferences, and this summer they are available in assorted colors and pattern options, ranging from dashingly daring to fashionably tame. If your clothing taste is simple and understated, try pairing seersucker shorts with a knit polo in your favorite color. If you live for fashion trends, choose a patterned short in a strong plaid or check. Bold colors are great options for shorts, as long as you balance them with a more subtle color on top. Spend between $25-$95 for your shorts.

This next trend is for the fashion fearless. Picture your favorite pair of summer shorts, a short-sleeved shirt and brightly colored loafers (without socks, of course). The daring aspect of this fashion trend is that your loafers should be in a color that is completely unrelated to the rest of your outfit, spend about $85 on them. Please don’t struggle to find that perfect pair of blue loafers to match your favorite blue, checked shirt. Instead, select a complimentary color (like these red loafers from Brooks Brothers with a blue or yellow shirt) for a look that is oh so summery. And, don’t forget that if your friends snicker at your colored loafers, it’s just because they are jealous that they didn’t pick up on this fashion trend first!

While you’re investing in the latest summer fashions, consider budgeting for a wardrobe staple that will compliment both your summer and fall wardrobes. Lightweight blazers like this olive version from Banana Republic that runs for $198, partner nicely with khakis, jeans and shorts all summer long. Cut to cooler weather, and your lightweight jacket will remain your go-to piece for pairing with long-sleeved button-ups or thin, fall sweaters and slacks.
