DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Besides the giant Ferris wheel, rival football games and wealth of exhibits, each year unique culinary creations are a feature at the State Fair of Texas.

On Monday, four judges rated the concoctions of eight concessionaires in the 7th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

When all the batter was fried, taste buds were tingled and pile of napkins were used… the Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack walked away the big winner.

Buffalo chicken won in the overall Best Taste category, but the Most Creative award went to the Fried Bubblegum.

The buffalo chicken flapjack is a chicken strip coated in flapjack batter and jalapeno breadcrumbs and then fried.

“I knew the product would be good and do well but I didn’t think it would win,” buffalo chicken creator Allan Weiss said. “I hoped. You always have that hope.”

Fair officials describe Fried bubblegum as a bubblegum-flavored marshmallow dipped in batter and “lightly fried to perfection.”

“It’s tough to get to this point. There’s a lot of good competition here,” bubblegum marshmallow creator Justin Martinez said. “I’m just happy to be here this year.”

Some of the other deep-fried concoctions in the competition were deep fried pineapple upside down cake, deep fried Texas salsa, a banana rolled in a flour tortilla, then topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar and cinnamon, a sausage and sauerkraut ball and a pastry filled with pumpkin and cream cheese.

The State Fair of Texas opens September 30 and runs through October 23.
