VAN ZANDT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A single vehicle accident in Van Zandt County has left five children dead and nearly half a dozen other adults and children injured.

The five victims reportedly include a 5-year-old boy and four girls — ages 3, 6, 12 and 13.

According to Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett, several of the injuries are considered serious.

The accident happened on Interstate 20 near Farm-to-Market Road 16 just east of Canton.

According to state troopers, an SUV rolled on the interstate, nearly to the frontage road, and came to rest upside down. Of the 12 people inside the SUV nine of them were reportedly ejected in the crash.

Everyone inside the vehicle is said to have been wearing swimsuits and investigators believe the group may have been headed to a nearby water park.

Some crash victims were taken to a hospital in Tyler; others were transported by air ambulance to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
