RICHLAND HILLS (CBSDFW.COM) – The North Texas father, who late last year admitted during an emergency call that he had carved a pentagram symbol on the back of his 6-year-old son, has been indicted by a grand jury.
Less than two weeks before Christmas 2012, dispatchers sent Richland Hills police to a house in the 3700 block of Ruth Road. There had just been a 911 call placed with a man saying, “I shed some blood.” The caller, later identified as Brent Troy Bartel, went on to tell a dispatcher, “I inscribed a pentagram on my son.”READ MORE: Military Plane Crashes In Residential Area, 3 Injured Up To 6 Homes Hit

Bartel is scheduled to appear in a Tarrant County courtroom on Wednesday.
Moments after Bartel allegedly placed called police, dispatch received another 911 call. The child’s mother had run to a neighbor’s house and in the background of the second call could be heard saying that her husband hurt her son. Richland Hills police Sgt. Nathan Stringer explained to KRLD NewsRadio 1080 last year that, “The mother had run next door [and] had called 911 as well. So, it was just the suspect and the child in the house.”READ MORE: Rowlett Restaurant Owner Explains No-Mask Policy After Asking Family To Leave
When police arrived they found the boy inside the house, wearing pajama bottoms and no shirt. There was a large pentagram carved into his back. Officers said the five-pointed star covered the majority of the child’s back. At the time of the attack, doctors had said the child was expected to recover.
Officers found a box cutter in the home that they believe was the weapon used to cut the child.
Bartel is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, an enhanced crime because it was committed against a family member, and faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. He remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.
