SAGINAW (CBSDFW.COM) – The FBI, the Texas Rangers and the Saginaw Police Department are all still investigating the case of a girl’s body which was found wrapped in a tarp in the middle of the street. The story has shaken the community, bringing dozens of neighbors together to find comfort and grieve.

Police have not yet released the name of the 6-year-old girl who was killed. But, less than two miles away from where she was found, investigators searched the home of the child’s parents. According to authorities, the girl was reported missing nearly two hours after her body was discovered by two teenagers.

The body was found naked, bound and covered in a tarp. Her head was wrapped in a plastic shopping bag.

John Smith was one of the two cousins who found the little girl’s body on Monday night. “I was just devastated, because when I saw the body I just started crying,” the 18-year-old said Tuesday. “I didn’t sleep at all. I’ve been up all day. I’m just exhausted. I’m scared I’ll go to sleep and not wake up.”

“It’s always going to be on my mind,” Smith added. “Every time I close my eyes, I can just picture the body over and over.”

Close to 100 people gathered at a nearby church on Tuesday night for a prayer vigil. Dozens more held a candlelight vigil at the street corner where the little girl was found. Children from around the neighborhood stopped by the site on Tuesday including 13-year-old Kirby Singleton, who left a small stuffed animal at a curbside memorial. “I thought she might like it,” the teen said, “and that she would just see the big eyes that are watching her, and that everyone loves her and misses her.”

Residents in the neighborhood where the girl lived told CBS 11 News that her father had gone around to several homes looking for his daughter on Monday night, about an hour after her body had been found. He told neighbors that he thought his daughter was watching cartoons at one of their homes.

Police have not stated how the girl was killed or if a suspect had been identified. It is possible, they said, that she was abducted from her home. As of Tuesday, authorities were still searching for a red truck with a green softball-sized paint splatter on the rear passenger side.
