AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Average statewide math scores on the SAT college entrance exam fell to 495 for this year’s high school graduating class — the lowest score since 1992.
Results released Tuesday showed that Texas’ average reading score also slipped to 476, the lowest since 2012. Writing scores held steady from last year at 461.
A perfect score is 800. Nationally, SAT scores remained relatively stagnant.
In a statement, however, the Texas Education Agency noted that there was also some good news.
It said that more than 164,000 Texas public school students took the SAT exam, up 4.4 percent from the previous academic year. It was the fifth straight year the state outpaced national increases in test participation.
And 63 percent of public school test-takers this year identified themselves as minority students.
