Emory has an impeccable record for treating patient with Ebola. Part of the reason is because it has customized rooms ready and waiting for patients like Vinson.

While on a tour, Doctor Bruce Ribner explained that Emory University Hospital has three of only 11 bio-containment rooms in the nation.

Each room has a separate entry, with motion-activated lights and sinks to limit physical contact.

Pointing, Dr. Ribner said, “That red square is part of our process for taking off personal protective equipment.”

It’s also the area where caregivers put on and take off protective clothing – helmets.

As far as risks to employees Ribner said, “We strongly believe that healthcare workers get infected by contaminating themselves.”

When Fort Worth Doctor Kent Brantly spoke to his wife, while at Emory, she sat at a window next to a phone while he spoke from an intercom inside the patient room.

Ribner explained that the patient’s room is designed as an individual Intensive Care Unit

Inside the patient room the air changes every three minutes and is filtered through vents. The toilets also drain into a separate sewer system.

If a caregiver gets contaminated there’s an emergency shower just outside the door. The cleansing area is designed and stalled in case someone is exposed by a large splash of bodily fluids.

So far, every Ebola patient who has entered an isolation room at Emory University Hospital has come out alive.
