FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – One of the two people accused of mishandling corpses this past summer at the Johnson Family Mortuary in Fort Worth appeared in court on Thursday morning.
Dondre Johnson and his wife, Rachel Hardy Johnson, both face seven counts of abuse of a corpse.
It was back in July that specialists from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office discovered eight neglected bodies — one of them an infant — in the Johnson Family Mortuary building. The bodies were found after the building’s landlord evicted the couple and then stumbled upon all of the decomposing bodies.
An attorney for the Texas Funeral Commission told CBS 11 News in July that the business was the focus of five investigations. Later, in September, the commission did not renew the business license that allowed Johnson Family Mortuary to operate as a funeral home in Texas.
Johnson’s hearing took place on Thursday morning in Fort Worth and the case was filed for continuance on January 8. Johnson’s wife is scheduled to appear in the same courtroom on Monday morning.
