GRANBURY (CBSDFW.COM) – Police have arrested a Granbury man on charges of impersonating a ranking Navy SEAL Officer.
Carlos Felipe Luna-Gonzalez, 29, portrayed himself on social media as an active-duty Navy SEAL officer and posted pictures of himself wearing a Navy dress uniform.
In the photos, Gonzalez also had several awards pinned to the uniform, which identified him as a Lieutenant Junior Grade Rank and having earned Jump Wings.
Gonzalez also made up a story that he was “shot while in combat,” and told law enforcement officers that he was currently but temporarily stationed at NAS Carswell, while awaiting a medical discharge for injuries he suffered during a Navy SEAL Operation in Africa.
One of the deceived law enforcement officers introduced Gonzalez to the owner of Lone Star Guns, a business known for supporting military veterans and the local wounded warrior project.
When Gonzalez accepted an LWRC assault rifle valued at $2,300, in appreciation for his service to his country, he was arrested for accepting the rifle under fraudulent terms.
At the time, Gonzalez was wearing a dress blue Navy uniform with an officer’s insignia, the Navy SEAL Trident and a Purple Heart.
Investigators say Gonzalez did serve in the Navy as an enlisted seaman apprentice. He never earned a purple heart or was involved in active combat.
“The entire situation is more than bothersome,” said Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, who himself is a Navy veteran. “It is plain troubling. Our citizens pride themselves in honoring true veterans, just as the rest of the country. This man stole a title which has been earned by many through bloodshed of their own.”
Gonzalez was arrested and charged with Theft, Tampering with Government Document, and Fraudulent or Fictitious Military Record.
Gonzalez bonded out Sunday after posting $18,500.
