DENTON COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) – A University of North Texas volleyball player suffered two devastating losses and neither of them were on the court.

For Cami Cherry volleyball is an escape. The game lifts her spirit everyday. “My teammates have been my rock,” the UNT senior said.

Her Mean Green team has helped her cope with unimaginable loss. “Some days are better than other,” says Cami , 21, “It just doesn’t feel real.”

A drunk driver killed Cami’s brother Tavian “T.J.” Sabur in September of 2011. The crash happened just blocks from the family home in Arlington, around 5:30 in the afternoon. T.J. was just 10 years old.

Cami’s mom, Tina Reese, barley survived the crash. CBS 11’s Arezow Doost interviewed her after the trial in January and she talked about her heartache.

The driver that killed her son pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. A Tarrant County Jury sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

Just last month the family had another loss and this one just as painful. “I just remember when they told me she was in an accident I just had the worst feeling I said not again,” Cami recalled “… like I can’t do this again.”

Mom Tina had been driving to Denton for one of her daughter’s volleyball games. She was killed when something flew through the windshield and hit her.

“Losing T.J. was really hard, but losing my mom is even harder just because that’s the person I turned to and she understood what it was like to lose T.J. and then I was hurt too.”

Cami can’t stop hearing her mom’s voice.

The young lady credits her faith for her strength. “I think the days I’m okay is because of all the prayers that people are asking; like pray for Cami, give her strength.” Cami said the kind thoughts are welcomed. “Continue to pray for me.”

Tina Reese was involved with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Now Cami says she will carry on her mom’s legacy and continue what she started, and talk about the horrible impact of drinking and driving.
