FRISCO (CBS 11 NEWS) – North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) crews pre-treated the bridges and overpasses Wednesday with a new brine solution.READ MORE: U.S. Border Patrol Stash House Busts Continue Along Texas-Mexico Border
This is the first year the NTTA has used this salt water solution.
The NTTA said the advantage of using a solution is it allows crews to pre-treat the roads hours before a potential weather event.
Once dry, the brine solution forms an “ice barrier”.
“That’s the beauty of this system,” said NTTA spokesperson Michael Rey. “It allows us to pre-treat well ahead of an event …and if that precipitation comes tomorrow morning, that barrier will still be in place waiting to accept it.”
More than 40,000 gallons of the brine solution was sprayed on the tollways by NTTA on Wednesday.READ MORE: Family Attorney: Brian Laundrie Remains Identified In Florida
The transportation authority says the cost of the brine is minimal.
Sand truck and even snow plows have also been put on standby just in case.
