CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A fatal head-on wreck collision forced police to shut down the 1600 block of South Josey Lane at Belt Line Road in Carrollton for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

It happened in front of R. L. Turner High School shortly before noon.

The victim was driving north in the southbound lanes of Josey when she hit another motorist head-on.

“An oncoming car saw her coming, realized what was happening and did her best to get out of the way but was unsuccessful,” said Carrollton Police spokeswoman Jolene DeVito.

Deborah Lynn Winters, 61, of Dallas was transported to Parkland Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police said the driver of that Volkswagen Passat was not injured in the crash. Collision reconstruction investigators collected evidence at the crash site to try to understand what went wrong.

“That’s the big question, and that’s what our investigators are out here working to try to figure out: why was she going the wrong direction.  We don’t know, and we’re certainly hoping to figure that out,” said DeVito.

Officials reopened Josey Lane at about 3 p.m.
