DENTON COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) – As snow turns into ice, the commute along Interstate-35E from Lewisville north through Denton is treacherous.
Already Friday evening, one truck couldn’t get up a hill on I-35E in Denton while traveling northbound at Highway 77. Traffic is being rerouted.
Other wrecks have slowed traffic to a crawl on the interstate Friday evening.
The accidents started happening along the highway as soon as the snow began falling Friday morning.
The driver of a Ford Explorer overturned along I-35E in Lewisville, near Fox Road around 10 a.m.
Paramedics transported the driver to a nearby hospital.
Lari-Lee Whiting of Denton takes the icy conditions seriously.
She put chains on her tires, just like they do up north to help her get around. “I’m from Mobile, Alabama so chains in the back of the car help when you have something like this. It actually makes a huge difference. Especially because I work over in Macy’s and the whole parking lot is like snow and ice and all of that about made it really easy for me to get out.”
Because of the snow Friday, Denton Independent School District gave parents the option of picking up their students early from school. Many did, including at McMath Middle School.
Some parents told us they wanted to take their children home themselves because they didn’t want their children on the bus on the slippery roads.
Mike Hall is among the parents we found. “Wasn’t sure about the conditions, heard about all the wrecks, coming into the area from the south, just wanted to avoid the hectic stuff going on.”
Hall’s daughter, Addison, a sixth-grader said any of her friends also went home early. “In my last class, there were only five kids in it, so a lot of people are going home.”
Denton ISD cancelled all extra-curricular activities after school Friday.
The University of North Texas closed its campus by mid-morning, and Texas Woman’s University cancelled classes as well.
