COLLIN COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) – Former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders was not in court today when the defamation trial against his former wife was set to begin. The NFL Hall of Famer is suing Pilar Sanders for accusing him of attempted murder and other crimes.

The judge denied Pilar Sanders’ motion to dismiss the case and attorneys for both sides agreed to continue the trial in the weeks ahead.

Pilar Sanders chose not to represent herself as she has in previous court appearances, and said she felt good going into today’s hearing.

Her attorney argued that the defamation case infringed on free speech, but the judge agreed with an attorney for Deion Sanders that free speech does not include defamation.

At issue are statements Pilar Sanders made on social media accusing her ex-husband of attempted murder, child abuse, assault, and other crimes.

Deion Sanders’ attorney called the motion to dismiss frivolous, and asked the judge to order the defendant to pay his attorney fees, but the judge denied that request.

“We gave it a good fight. That just means it continues… nobody has to pay fees at this point,” said Pilar Sanders attorney Bobbie Edmonds.

Attorney’s for Deion Sanders tell me they’re happy with today’s outcome, and they say they expect this to be a very short trial.
