DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Ten days after the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed a 2-year-old girl died in a hot car police have arrested her father for the death.

Dallas police have arrested 40-year-old Hamuda Raufa and charged him with Abandoning a Child/Imminent Danger for the death of his daughter Sekinat Nariyah Raufu. The child, who family called Nariyah, died on July 17.

The girl’s parents told authorities that they had taken Nariyah and her six siblings to Fair Park to celebrate Ramadan. After spending the day outdoors, they said the family returned home and all the children went inside to take a nap.

The parents both told authorities that it wasn’t until Raufa went back out to work on the vehicle that he discovered the little girl was still inside, strapped in her car seat. The parents told police he removed Nariyah from the vehicle, took her inside and called 911. While on the phone Raufa said Nariyah’s mother, Khalilah Busby, performed CPR for approximately 30 minutes, but then drove the little girl to Medical City Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Both parents said they thought Nariyah had gotten out of the vehicle and went inside with the other children. One day after the little girl’s death Busby spoke with CBS 11 News. Through tears she said, “I miss my baby… she was just wonderful.”

Busby said she blamed herself for what happened — for losing count of her child. “By somebody telling me that everybody was in the house I took that instinct. And I said ‘okay, let me get the other two and we’re gonna go in the house.’ No you gotta look back. The weather is too hot for this. It was too hot for this.”

Child Protective Services was notified after Nariyah‘s death.
