KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) – Just hours before Keller ISD board members were scheduled to vote on a controversial change to the anti-discrimination policy, all action was postponed.
“While this set of policies went through our normal review process the responses we have received have convinced us that many of our constituents may have inaccurate perceptions regarding the purpose and impact of these proposed changes. Therefore, to better educate the public and continue seeking solutions that clearly identify our desire to protect all students and make them feel safe, we will pull this item from the agenda,” wrote Dr. Randy Reid, Keller ISD superintendent.
The change would have added gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender to the anti-discrimination policy.
Both sides of the issue were disappointed when learning no decision would be made on Thursday night.
“I was nervous. I was excited. I was just really ready to go,” said Casey Akers, a Timber Creek High School student. “I was kind of appalled. Very disappointed and I was upset but it just means more time to influence others.”
The issue originated with Akers after she said administrators told her a “promposal” to a female student was inappropriate back in April.
While many joined Akers in support, others spent the evening airing their concerns surrounding the change.
“I believe that they’re morally and spiritually wrong,” said Kristi Lisenbee, a Keller ISD parent. “The current language already supports all of our students.”
Lisenbee worries the change could impact who uses what restroom and how sex education is taught in school.
She was not alone.
Akers and others in support said it is not about moral or special treatment.
“We just want to be treated equally like everybody else,” said Akers.
The district said in the coming weeks, it will use the time to continue educating parents and teachers about the potential policy changes.
It is unclear when the issue could emerge again on the agenda.
