AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Texas health investigators have visited several Planned Parenthood clinics in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston, as Texas moves to halt Medicaid funding to the organization.
A spokesman for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission declined comment Thursday, and what investigators did at the clinics was unclear.
But the move comes three days after Texas announced it had begun booting Planned Parenthood from the joint state-federal Medicaid program.
Thursday morning officials with the Inspector General’s Office were at a Planned Parenthood location in North Dallas taking pictures. After the ‘visit’ Yvonne Gutierrez, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas, issued a statement that said, in part –
“Governor Abbott’s political grandstanding is on full display this morning. Representatives from
the Texas Office of Inspector General showed up at Planned Parenthood health centers in
Houston, Dallas and San Antonio looking for an excuse to take health care away from
thousands of women and men who rely on Planned Parenthood for preventive care — but what
they will see is professional, compassionate and quality health care. Despite their efforts to
distort the truth, health care — no matter what — is what happens at Planned Parenthood.”
State health officials have pointed to undercover videos released by an anti-abortion group to allege that Planned Parenthood misspent Medicaid funding.
Planned Parenthood denies wrongdoing and says the videos are deceptive. They feature the group’s officials discussing fetal tissue.
Planned Parenthood says it’ll fight to continue operating in Texas, and has sued to stop similar blocking of Medicaid funding in neighboring Louisiana.
