FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – The former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, General David Petraeus, is in North Texas. He is just one of the government leaders taking part in an effort to get veterans back on track.
Petraeus and Representative Kay Granger are keynote speakers at the Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair in Fort Worth. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation website, Hiring Our Heroes is a “a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities.”
Some 300 veterans and spouses are expected to attend the event that runs from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
According to officials with Hiring Our Heroes, more than 85 companies are taking place in the hiring fair. Representatives with the companies are accepting resumes and even doing on the spot interviews.
Petty Officer Second Class Francisco Puga is attending the event and says he’s been looking for a job for months. “It’s competitive. Everybody is looking [for a job] especially everybody I used to work with in the oil field. We’ve all gotten laid off or decided to change careers and everybody is looking.”
Former General Petraeus explained that after serving more than 37 years in the United States Army he’s now trying to help veterans get hired. “They’ve demonstrated discipline, often have leadership expertise and literally have experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in any other pursuit.”
Petraeus, a four star general who led U.S. military forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned from the CIA in 2012 after his affair with an Army Reserve officer became public.
Officials with Hiring Our Heroes claim that since their initiative began in 2011, more than 27,000 veterans and spouses have been hired.
The Fort Worth Hiring Our Heroes event is being held at the downtown Hilton, located at 815 Main Street. Job seekers are encouraged to register online on the U.S. Chamber Foundation website.
