DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joined the GBAG Nation this morning for his weekly segment.
Jones was asked if he wanted to expand on the comments he made Monday night regarding his coaching staff’s ability to win games without Tony Romo. Jones had previous said that “I am stunned that we haven’t been able to win more games without Tony,” Jones said, via the Star-Telegram. “And I would have thought that we could have coached it up enough, and put it together enough, that we would not have lost those games without Romo early. We would be in better shape than we are right now.”
Today, Jerry clarified what he was trying say. “A long with that you have the plus that we have competed like we have and have managed to put those games right down to the wire for the most part, that’s coaching and that creates the kind of will and the kind of competitiveness that we’re seeing on this team and that we saw the other night against Washington,” said Jones. “But you would have thought that the edge gives you an opportunity to win at least half of those games that were just right at the wire and that marginal. And so, I think I used the word hope, but I would have hoped, thought… I hate to use the word flip of the coin, luck, those kind of things, but I have a lot of respect for this coaching staff. When I look at the game plan that Marinelli put together last week defensively, it just really was impressive and executed impressively. The point is you would have thought that we would have been able, even though we were short-handed with our talent on the field, you would have thought that we could get some of those losses we had with wins.”
Jones then went on to talk again about what if Dallas had Cassel in the games that Weeden had started.
“On the other hand, if you want to look at any aspect of this team you can say well, if we would have been in better shape had you had Matt Cassel in the spring, rather than Weeden, and I’m not trying to knock Weeden, but if we would have had a guy like Cassel in here than we might have made a difference there, so put that one ultimately on my shoulders for sure.”
