ROWLETT (CBS11) – A scam alert after tornado victims said they’re being taken advantage of by out of area contractors.

David Smith said his Rowlett home had barely stopped shaking from Saturday’s tornado when he had visitors.

“They were showing up left and right, cards and letters taped to the door. Roofing companies,” said Smith.

He said those roofing companies wanted to help for a price.

“We haven’t seen a policeman and fire truck yet and I’m like where are these guys coming from so fast. Most of them weren’t even from the area,” said Smith.

Smith said one company wanted to charge him hundreds to sweep debris.

“They are trying to get my wife to pay them, just to move stuff out to the curb,” said Smith.

Smith didn’t hire them.

His neighbor, Doug Ferguson, hired an out of area company to tarp his roof for $500.

“We had holes in the roof, he offered to patch them,” said Ferguson.

The president of the North Texas Roofers and Contractors Association, AJ Huckaby, said when he saw the tarp job on Ferguson’s home.  He redid it for free.

“We did. The tarps were just piecemealed to the roof. If it would have rained, water would have gotten in,” said Huckaby.

Huckaby has been in Rowlett since Saturday putting up tarps on roofs and boards on windows for free. He said at least two companies are reportedly overcharging tornado victims or doing shoddy work.

Huckaby is passing out flyers from the NTRCA reminding homeowners what to do before they hire a roofer or contractor.

“They are preying on people, it’s wrong to make money off tragedy,” said Smith.
