The Texas Department of Transportation and the Cowboys gave Justin Truby, a finance major at UNT, a 2016 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid car to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the “Don’t mess with Texas” litter-prevention campaign.

“I congratulate Truby on winning the new Ford Fusion Hybrid and am grateful to the Dallas Cowboys, who help us raise awareness on the importance of making our state litter-free,” Texas Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin III said in a statement.

The litter-prevention campaign aims to persuade people to put litter in trash cans instead of throwing it out the windows of their vehicles. Researchers estimate half a billion pieces of litter can be seen along state-managed highways — mostly napkins, wrappers and cigarette butts — according to TxDOT. Litter cleanup cost the state $35 million in 2014.

Truby, a Denton resident, was picked out of three finalists to receive the car in the sweepstakes during the Cowboys’ game against the Washington Redskins at AT&T Stadium.

It’s been a rough week for the UNT community, which has been mourning the shooting death of 20-year-old classmate Sara Mutschlechner.
