DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Charm and personal service are the pillars that Green Beans Toy Boutique in Dallas’ Lakewood neighborhood was built upon, but even that wasn’t enough to keep the beloved mom and pop shop from losing money to big companies and closing its doors.
Green Beans manager Marchell Dean has been with the store for the 7 years they have been in business. She says they have consistently lost customers to online retailers and big box stores. So much so that they now cannot afford to keep the store open.
Dean said, “They will come in and see something, and say I can get that cheaper on Amazon. That kind of cuts like a knife…we can’t compete with that.”
For the handful of employees, the stores closing date also means they will need to find new jobs.
Dean added, “ Having to go through interview and things like that again…it’s pretty tough.”
Green Beans’ predicament is a saddening one for all those who have a connection the store, but it certainly isn’t rare. Recently, the surge of online retailers and discounts at big box stores throughout North Texas has forced many local stores to fair the same fate.
A large sign saying the store is going out of business hangs at the front of the store, but the real message to the community is one of gratitude.
Dean said, “we just appreciate everybody that has supported us and has been here.”
Green Beans will close its doors on January 24.
