FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Police said a home invasion on Miami Springs Drive in south Fort Worth ended with a teenage intruder dead in a driveway.
“I came out this morning… I was getting ready to leave and I saw a young black gentleman in the driveway,” said Joshua Tanksley who lives across the street. “He was just laying there.”
Police say moments before, Kevin Brown, 16, was part of a home invasion.
Investigators said someone kicked in the door to the home and Brown entered. Neighbors said another teenager who lives in the home shot Brown, who fled and collapsed in the driveway about 100 yards away.
“He was bleeding a little bit, you couldn’t really tell,” Tanksley said “We was checking for a pulse. And he didn’t have pulse. He was already dead. One of his shoes came off at the light down there. You can tell he was running or something. Than a couple minutes later a white Caucasian lady came around the corner on the phone she wasn’t talking too much then. But when police pulled up she said her 15-year-old son had shot him as he was trying to break into their house.”
Both the family of the shooter and of Brown were visibly distraught at the scene. Brown’s father said his 16-year-old son is the father of a 14-month-old baby. Brown, his baby and the baby’s mother lived with Brown’s father.
Police are searching for a suspect or suspects who were at the scene and fled in a black Mazda. Police didn’t offer any better description of the vehicle.
Residents said there were a rash of car break-ins and burglaries in the area and they hope the shooting sends a message.
“My message to them, because I have a son that young, is — you got to stop man,” said Curtis Bailey, whose home was burglarized recently. “Go get you a job. Do something positive because that breaking and entering is going to get you where this guy is, you know, resting in peace.”
