DALLAS (CBS11)  – 100 men who give a damn, plus several more, met with local charities Thursday to decide which would receive the men’s pooled money.

That’s 100 guys each with checks for $100, so that’s a minimum of $10,000, plus more expected to be raised. This is the first of four times the group will do this this year, and they’re already promising that’s just the beginning.

When the co-founder of the Halifax, Nova Scotia group, 100 Women Who Care bet a man he couldn’t find even five guys who care, that was the beginning of Halifax’s 100 Men Who Give A Damn. One of those men was Dallas’s Charles Gillis on vacation in Canada.

“Halifax is much smaller than Dallas, and these guys raised $200,000, so I was like, we’ve got to be able to match that, and even do better here in Dallas,” Gillis said.

Over the last two years, the Halifax group has raised money to help the local SPCA keep puppies alive and to help other groups by donating at least $10,000 made up of $100 donations from members. The group has served as a model for other cities to start their own chapters, and now Dallas stands to become the largest U.S. city to give a damn.

“I think we’re going to show that the guys in Dallas can stand up,” Gillis said.

Members nominate local charities. Then three charities are chosen at random to present at the meeting. The group votes and each member writes his own $100 check directly to the chosen charity, so 100% of the proceeds go toward serving a specific need.

“We’re a non-organization organization. We don’t have a bank account, a physical address. There’s no board of directors. We’re just a bunch of men who get together who give a damn,” Dallas member Marv Bramlett said.

The organizers tell us they’ve already received interest in forming a local women’s group and additional chapters in other parts of the Metroplex.
