PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – On the prowl and after pets, the City of Plano is investigating a coyote attack after a neighborhood dog was nearly killed on Thursday.

Milton Jackson said he left his dog “Sky” outside for a moment to get a cup of coffee inside his home. As he started walking back to the front door, he heard scratching and yelping. When he opened the door, he found his dog in the jaws of an estimated 75 pound coyote.

“I’m pretty upset about it. I feel like it’s my fault. She’s hurt,” said Jackson.

He started yelling and then tried kicking the coyote but the wild animal eventually crept away.

“It seemed like it was pretty comfortable being here,” said Jackson. “I don’t know that they wouldn’t attack a child. I mean if it had been one of my grandsons who walked out on the porch instead of me, would he have been attacked?”

Neighbor Donna Macey was outside and said the animal came after her next.

“I guess something really bad is going to have to happen. People are going to start shooting at these things to protect their homes, their families and pets and I don’t want to see that happen,” said Macey.

The City of Plano released a statement on Thursday night assuring residents it was looking into the attack. The city also referenced that last week it had just started “humane trapping” in areas with reports of wildlife or nests. Jackson said after experiencing his dog’s brush with death, he hopes something more aggressive is done to keep everyone safe.

“I’ll have to keep her inside unless I got her on a short leash you know with me all the time. And then I’m not too sure we’re safe then,” said Jackson.

The City of Plano is hoping to have a trapper in the area on Friday morning.
