She was hit with an enormous bill simply because of the clinic she chose and learned a lesson that may help others.
It was late at night when Susan McCulloch walked into First Choice Emergency Room on Preston Road in Plano.
“I couldn’t handle it anymore so I went to what I thought was a doc in a box,” says McCulloch.
The Plano mother thought she had strep throat and was treated with an injection and given a prescription for antibiotics.
“Was just like going to my doctors office,” she says.
This week McCulloch received her bill and the sight of it made her even more sick.
“And I opened it up and it said $8,196 and I was like what,” she says.READ MORE: Texas Mother And Son Arrested In Wyoming For Murder In Oklahoma
She says bill was for her shot of penicillin and screening that insurance will only cover a little more than a thousand dollars of.
McCulloch says the clinic should have been more clear about its pricing.
“I think it might’ve been good business for them to let me know that this was not an emergency and you might want to go to urgent care versus us,” she says.
CBS 11 News tried to get answers at the emergency room but were told to contact the corporate office which did not respond to messages.
McCulloch thought she was using a typical walk in clinic and so did other patients we found online who complain about $1,500 bills for head colds, finger cuts and $2,600 for flu treatment.
“I don’t know if even an emergency room would have charged me $8,000,” says McCulloch. “I think it’s wrong. I think it’s wrong.”
First Choice bills itself as the nations oldest and largest freestanding emergency room system.
McCulloch plans to fight her bill which she says she can’t afford to pay.MORE NEWS: Southlake Ranks 20th 'Best Small City In America'; Keller & Flower Mound Most Affordable
