DALLAS (CBS11) – Plagued by claims of leaky roofs and crumbling buildings, South Oak Cliff High School can now add termites to the list of complaints.
DISD confirmed on Thursday termites were found in the column of a wall in the nurse’s office.
“Especially in the nurse’s office where people go when they need help, that’s very uncomfortable. I don’t even want to go to the nurse’s office,” said David Johnson, a senior at South Oak Cliff High School.
Johnson was one of the many students who walked out of class earlier in the school year. They were protesting the poor conditions of their campus.
“It’s very embarrassing. I mean there’s always a problem, there’s always problems coming up,” said Johnson.
Now, students have bugs eat away their school.
“I mean that’s just another distraction,” said Johnson.
The district said exterminators filled the column of the wall with foam to kill the termites.
Some parents feel the action is not enough. They worry about what could happen next to the school.
“It don’t sit well. They need to do something,” said LaKendra Nyle, a parent of a student. “They got too many complications coming up in one year.”
Many students and parents are pushing the district for a new building. Johnson hopes DISD and board members hear his message.
“Give us what we deserve. Give the community what it deserves. Stand with SOC and give us a new school,” said Johnson.
Next month, DISD school board members could decide whether or not to approve a new building.
A district spokesperson said exterminators will be back out at the campus on Friday to see if any other actions are necessary.
