DALLAS (CBS11) – Concerns over the Zika virus continue to grow throughout North Texas, and now some residents are taking precautionary measures into their own hands.

Pest control companies and mosquito removal experts are reporting never-before seen work loads because homeowners are not waiting for their city crews to spray their neighborhoods for mosquitoes.

The proactive moves according to Michael Bosco of Safe Haven Pest Control comes from increased fear over the spread of  Zika and the danger it poses to pregnant women.

“Microcephally has really added to the level of concern of Zika that the West Nile didn’t necessarily have,” said Bosco.

Dallas homeowner Megan Bell said she chose to hire a mosquito removal expert out of an abundance of caution.

“We would rather be over-prepared,” said Bell.  “We would rather be overly cautious and we are just going to take the appropriate steps.”

Bosco said the continuous rain in the Metroplex will increase the risk for mosquito transmitted diseases and keep his company very busy.
